The Significance of Family Relationships

Release Date:

John talks to Dominique Brits, a family centred life coach based in Johannesburg. Her passion is developing and deepening relationships within a family setting. As a teacher in both mainstream and special needs settings she has learnt how much we have in common when it comes to family and how a strong, effective, and emotionally healthy family dynamic can increase the quality of  life of all those within it. Dominique discusses her own experiences with family and later relationships, and how she has developed and learned to deal with negative habits and experiences.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Dominique became a life coach after her teaching career and learning from her clients has helped her own family relationships.
She facilitates honest communication with her clients by creating a safe space for them to be honest without being judged.
Our biggest critic is ourselves. There are lots of things that can inhibit us from speaking out, but self critical thinking is among the most common.
Boundaries within family, the amount of freedom of expression and movement, are different from family to family. What we see in other families can make us question our own upbringing.
Coaching can help people to see there is no quick fix for changing habits, thought processes and neural pathways.

BEST MOMENTS
‘It’s just a safe space for them to talk. It’s a safe space for them to really open up and not have that feeling of judgement around something that they’re embarrassed about, something that they’re too afraid to speak about, something they can't find the words for.’ – Dominique
‘Maybe the fear of the reaction of what the outcome is going to be because I've actually told someone what I want or what I need at this moment.’ - John
‘My ‘core wound’ is ‘I am below average’. Having three older sisters where they were doing all of these other things and I couldn’t. Not because I wasn’t able to, but because of that age gap of seven years.’ – Dominique
‘My aim to achieve is really about getting families to communicate. Really, actually listen to each other and understand. A lot of parents when their teens come to me go ‘here’s my teen, she’s 16 and now listen to me.’’ - Dominique
‘When you’re triggered or when something happens when you would have usually done this, you’ve now got another way of saying, ‘ actually do I want to do this anymore?’’ – John
