Amplify Education

S4-E14: What it takes to be a literacy education changemaker: Kareem Weaver

In this episode, Susan Lambert sits down with Kareem Weaver to discuss change management for educators implementing the Science of Reading. Kareem Weaver is a member of the Oakland NAACP Education Committee and a leader of the organization Full and Complete Reading is a Universal Mandate (FULCRUM). He was also an award-winning teacher and administrator in Oakland, California, and Columbia, South Carolina. Kareem discusses what the Science of Reading is at the simplest level and why it’s important that educators are undivided in backing the research. He goes on to give an impassioned plea to educators to come together, because this is an issue that impacts all kids. Kareem also highlights the importance of meeting educators where they are and realizing that change cannot happen if teachers aren’t given the tools and support they need first. Lastly, Kareem calls for systemic changes to education so tha

S7 E13: Systems, Groupthink, and Anarchy?

We made it! Yes my friends, we've made it to the end of another season, and what a season it has been. Throughout the past couple months, I've been discussing how to opt out of many of the systems that govern modern life. While I've enjoyed creating a new style of content and discussing new topics I've never talked about before, it has come with a fair share of criticism. In today's episode, I discuss some of the valid criticism I received over this season, why I object to "Groupthink", and why it's important to have disagreements and healthy discussion with people who don't share your point of view. In addition, find out why I think some systems aren't only valuable but essential for society to function. As always, thanks for joining me on the Old Fashioned on Purpose podcast. Enjoy your holiday season, and I look forward to what's coming in the new year! This episode is proudl

Jackie is newly engaged, but thoughts about her big day fill her with dread, not excitement. Jackie and her fiance want to have only vaccinated people at their wedding to protect some vulnerable family members from COVID-19. However, requiring vaccination means Jackie’s parents and sister likely won’t attend, which would break Jackie’s heart. On this episode of How To!, we bring on Nwandi Lawson, a former journalist who now runs a communications firm specializing in difficult conversations. ep 259: Thanksgiving Episode-Life Lessons from Rick Hall

Happy Thanksgiving friends!
Today’s Thanksgiving episode has been inspired by and dedicated to the life of my dear friend Rick Hall who unexpectedly passed away suddenly at the age of 54 a few weeks ago.
If you’re a long-time listener of TOL, you may recall hearing Rick on episode 178 where we talked about Spring Cleaning under Quarantine (FYI: he secretly wanted to be my co-host!)
As I was preparing my annual Thanksgiving episode, I found myself reflecting on all of the things for which I am most grateful. As I sat quietly on my back porch with a cup of coffee, I kept coming back to Rick; how he lived and the life lessons he taught me. As you read through this list, you’ll see there is not one mention of material things (although he did love his Converse collection!)
So here goes…
Practice Gratitude-I made this a daily practice in 2018 and it has changed how I look at life. Even in our darkest

Now That We're A Family

Having children is hands-down one of the most life-changing and impactful events in any person's life. As blissful as it is to welcome a newborn into the world, for many people, it only goes downhill from there. We believe, however, that life can become more rich and beautiful as our family grows in age and numbers. We are so grateful for examples of marriages that become more romantic with each child, fathers and mothers that become more vibrant and energetic as they age, and families that, as a unit, live life to the fullest--blessing their communities as they do.

In 2020, Jennifer and her husband inherited a family house in which they were beginning to renovate. Unexpectedly she was diagnosed with breast cancer and Jerry had to finish most of the renovations himself. He also had to move them in to their new home because Jennifer was too weak from cancer treatments. Jennifer reached out to me because her kitchen was the only room in the house that was yet to be decluttered and organized.

1)Wanted to start out by saying thank you for making my 30 min drive to and from work some of the most enjoyable and informative time of my day. My question is regarding lumber storage; I have a small one car garage shop that has a slight twist from the norm. Though it is a “garage” it is built over a basement and has a thick wooden floor. The basement space is unused and is connected to the basement of the house via a door. Do you guys think the atmospheric conditions in the basement would differ enough from the above garage space as to cause issues if I used it for my lumber storage area. My shop is well organized but pretty tight. I’ll have storage in the shop for smaller wood and I have a dedicated shelve system under my miter saw station to store all the parts for a single project minus larg

Ep. 203: The 5 Myths of Scaling

“Success” is not just about your business revenue. And it’s also not even simply about the impact you have in the world.  My definition of scaling your business is “making more money, impacting more people, and working less time.” The working less time part is the part that is the most important for moms.  So many people build businesses that make a lot of money, but they sacrifice things - rest, physical or emotional wellbeing, time with family or friends, hobbies… To me, that isn’t success.  To me, success also encapsulates the HOW. The way you did it matters - just as much as the money and the impact.  A lot of you have concerns and thoughts about scaling and I want to erase these fears. I want you to become aware of them but I also want to help you overcome them so that you are not afraid of scaling.  On today’s podcast episode, I’m talking about the biggest myths business owners believe when it comes to scaling, and lay out the truth of s

Teaching Science In 3D

Nicole VanTassel & Erin Sadler

The Brain Science Behind Your Students' (Missing) Engagement

When things aren't working, sometimes you need to come back to the basics. In this episode, we look at the brain science behind student engagement (or lack thereof) in the classroom. In the midst of a global pandemic, the "stuff that gets us by" might not be effective enough to "get us by" -- so we may find value in returning to the foundations of authentic engagement and successful 3D teaching: strong classroom relationships, safe community, and routines. This episode (the first of a short series) digs into what's going on in your students' brains as the first step to understanding what you can do to meet their needs right now while paving the way for more successful learning in your classroom moving forward.Referenced Resources:Spark SubscriptionCulturally Responsive Teaching & The Brain*More Resources: Teaching Science in 3D on Instagram & FacebookSubmit a QuestionExplo
