Dr. Alia Crum: Science of Mindsets for Health & Performance | Episode 56

My guest is Dr. Alia Crum, Associate (tenured) Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Mind & Body Lab. Dr. Crum is a world expert on mindsets and beliefs and how they shape our responses to stress, exercise, and even to the foods we eat. We discuss how our mindset about the nutritional content of food changes whether it is satisfying to us at a physiological (hormonal and metabolic) level. She also tells how mindsets about exercise can dramatically alter the effects of exercise on weight loss, blood pressure, and other health metrics. Dr. Crum teaches us how to think about stress in ways that allow stress to grow us and bring out our best rather than diminish our health and performance. Throughout the episode, Dr. Crum provides descriptions of high-quality peer-reviewed scientific findings that we can all leverage toward better health and performance in our lives

The Science Behind Why We Age | Episode 1

In this episode, Dr. David Sinclair and co-host Matthew LaPlante discuss why we age. In doing so, they discuss organisms that have extreme longevity, the genes that control aging (mTOR, AMPK, Sirtuins), the role of sirtuin proteins as epigenetic regulators of aging, the process of "ex-differentiation" in which cells begin to lose their identity, and how all of this makes up the "Information Theory of Aging", and the difference between "biological age" and "chronological age" and how we can measure biological age through DNA methylation clocks.

She’s a graduate of three different training programs at Spirit Rock, including their four-year Retreat Teacher Training Program. In this conversation, Booker makes the case that one of the most important, even life-saving, tools when it comes to dealing with anxiety is our ability to connect with other people. And - like the three characteristics, Booker argues that the experience of anxiety is inherently impermanent, unsatisfactory, and unreliable (or, in Pali, it has the characteristics

The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.

While this season may bring lots of good things like gathering with loved ones and some days off of work, it can also mean family pressures, anxiety, stress, and overwhelm. In November 2017, I shared some thoughts here on the podcast about the differences between the holiday blues and a major depressive disorder and a few tips on how to steady yourself for the holidays and all of that information is just as true today.

Are difficult people really doing the best they can?

If you know that a difficult or even toxic person in your life is not doing the best they can to show up in a way that tells you they're at least trying to improve themselves in some way, maybe they are not capable. At least, not at this time. And sometimes we have to see people for who they are today, not who we or they believe they will become tomorrow.

In this episode of Opposing Views, James Lindsay and Ian Kochinski, better known as Vaush, joined me to discuss Critical Race Theory.  We covered a range of topics surrounding CRT, starting of course with what it is and what it’s trying to solve, where it’s being taught, the agenda behind it, and what we can do about it. But we also touch on related topics like social biases, anti-capitalism, and the idea of whiteness / the over-focus on race that’s so prevalent today.  James Lindsay is an American author, mathematician, and political commentator. He is known for having co-authored a series of hoax papers for social science journals, perhaps the best-known being “The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct” and the one where “unwanted humping” at dog parks was observed day in and day out, resulting in an informed breakdown of how men would benefit from being trained like do

The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively With Todd Kashdan

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/insubordination When I first received the book The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively by my guest on today's show, Todd Kashdan, I thought it was going to be some fringe rebel handbook or something like TheAlchemist's Cookbook, or a title that was meant to incite riots and violence. I was dead wrong. Instead, this book is a research-based toolbox for anyone who wants to create a world with more justice, creativity, and courage. For ideas to evolve and for societies to progress, we desperately need rebels to challenge conventional wisdom and improve on it. Unfortunately, most of us fear nonconformists, perceiving them as disloyal, reckless, destructive, or just plain weird. Because most would-be rebels lack the strength and skills to overcome hostile audiences, principled insubordination remains an underleveraged asset in the workplace an

I have about 10 pounds more to lose. I feel very satisfied with one meal a day and 800 calories, but I am concerned that I might damage my metabolism if I go very long on OMAD (one meal a day). Is that something that is OK or should I make sure I get more calories 3 or 4 days a week? [09:08] 3. When doing one-meal-a-day, how much should you eat and/or how long should you eat? [17:50] 4. When it is said, “Intermittent fasting is not about diet,” why are we told to do keto or low-carbohydrate diets? [24:56] Have questions you want us to answer? They listen to their bodies; they move intuitively. Sometimes that means handstands, sometimes it means yoga, and a lot of the time it means a cold morning swim in the Irish Sea.In this chat with Fearne, Dave and Steve explain why they feel community is the antithesis of loneliness, as all human beings ultimately have the same needs: to be accepted, seen, and loved. Plus, as fellow vegans, the three discuss getting more vegetables into your diet when you’re time poor. The Happy Pear’s latest book, The Veg Box, is available to pre-order now.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Is my dentist scamming me? | Am I Normal? with Mona Chalabi

When a dentist tells us something is wrong with our teeth, we tend to follow their advice. But when Mona visits two different dentists, they give her two wildly different diagnoses (with wildly different price tags). So how do we know who's telling the tooth? Mona digs up the dental data to look for answers, and finds that in reality, the study of dentistry is riddled with holes.

This is an episode of Am I Normal? with Mona Chalabi, another podcast from the TED Audio Collective. If you like it, you can find all the episodes by following Am I Normal? with Mona Chalabi wherever you're listening to this.

Shawn Stevenson: Vaccine Mandates, Zombie Wasps and Psychoneuroimmunology

Today’s science & technology allows us to cross planets and modify genes, yet chronic diseases still shoot us down. If our systems are so advanced, why are we still the sickest nation in history? That’s a question addressed by Shawn Stevenson in this eye-opening episode. Here, Shawn unveils the faults in our healthcare system and the role of the government and media in perpetuating fear among us. He explains that the fear that helps us spot a threat is the same fear that makes us commit bad decisions for ourselves and others. While fear serves as our mechanism for survival, Shawn argues it has also been a tool that corporations, politicians, and capitalists use as a form of control…and a source of billon-dollar profits! As long as we’re afraid to take charge of our own lives, they will continue to feed on us, and we will continue to grapple with the crisis of fear. From the hyperbolic COVID-19 media co

Give Yourself Some Slack: Perfectly Imperfect

One of the reasons that many of us have trouble giving ourselves slack is because of our internalized perfectionism - it's something that controls our workflow and prevents us from ever taking a break because in our head we know we could be doing more. Even during the writing of this episode I had to fight off some of this internal perfectionism - this episode wasn't supposed to be entirely about perfectionism, but it was going to take a lot more than just one section to really tackle the topic - so now what was just going to be a two-part episode on giving yourself some slack is a series - and had I come into this knowing it was going to be a series I would have definitely approached it differently, but that's okay, it doesn't have to be perfect. In today's episode, we're going to be exploring the idea of how perfection acts as a coping mechanism - and why that's not a great thing. We'll al

#09: Sleep & Alcohol - Part 2

On last week’s episode, we learned about the three main ways alcohol can harm our sleep: 1) alcohol results in sedation rather than naturalistic sleep, 2) alcohol causes sleep fragmentation, and 3) alcohol impairs REM sleep. Today, Matt dives into each of these negative impacts, explaining exactly how and why alcohol disrupts our sleep in these specific ways.First, alcohol is a class of chemicals called “the sedatives,” and sedation is not natural sleep. Healthy sleep is a very active, highly coordinated event within the brain, unlike sedation. As a result, alcohol can result in you waking up and feeling unrestored and unrefreshed by that non-normal sleep. Second, we normally need to shut off our fight-or-flight branch of the nervous system, called the sympathetic nervous system, and shift over to the calming, parasympathetic nervous system, in order to stay asleep soundly across the night. However, alcohol reactivates the fight-or-flight ne

Episode 187 - The Fiery Furnace of Ambition

Ambition is a fire whose flames first rise in the first half of life when hopes and dreams are fueled by possibilities in the external world. It takes creative audacity to seize a dream, develop a talent, or commit to a calling. Ambition can also be fueled by narcissism, power-seeking, or striving to overcome inadequacy. Too much fire can consume and corrupt us; insufficient heat forsakes potential for flickering fantasies. Jungian scholar and author James Hillman writes that each of us has an innate blueprint for becoming in The Soul’s Code. Ambition can best be the discovery of our authentic purpose in the world, a combination of character and call that provides the heat needed to find and pursue our destiny. Integrity is the true source of energy for pursuing a goal, persevering in its attainment, and allowing desire for distinction in the external world to serve development in the inner world.   Here’s the dream we analyze: “I

Attention and focus may be at the top of every employer’s list and every woman’s dating requirements. We live in a society that highly values attention and praises anyone who can focus long enough to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Yet, many of us continue to struggle with both. Mindfulness is viewed as something that would be nice but very few are actually mastering the practice of being present and attentive in the here and now. With stress and overwhelm overtaking us at every turn in the day our minds are flooded and vulnerable to digital attacks

The Sweetness of Venus - A History of the Clitoris

Today I am lucky enough to interview Sarah Chadwick, author of “The Sweetness of Venus”.
She is passionate about sex equality, gender studies, humor and learning.
Her book is dedicated to: “This book is for all those who have a clitoris, or the opportunity to engage with one.”
Why she wrote this book!
You talk about how the clitoris is lost and found and lost and found throughout documented history.
“17th-century under-the-table narrative about sex has a strong emphasis on mutual pleasure that is noticeably lacking in many of today’s sex-ed books and in too many sex-ed classes.”
Why don’t we tell girls and boys about this aspect of a woman’s anatomy?
We discuss the female condition of being frigid – now we have a medical disorder if we don’t orgasm with PIV sex.
In 1994 U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jocelyn Elders suggested sex should be mentioned as safe and healthy in school curricula. In

Hypothangry | Dr. Vickie Bhatia

Hypothangry: Imagining a hypothetical confrontation, then playing out the fight you’d hypothetically have with that person inside your own brain. Fantasy fights are often conducted with loved ones or friends, but can occur with total strangers. (See: “hypothetically angry,” the cousin-once-removed of “rehearsing disaster.”) Today, licensed clinical psychologist and Whole30 Certified Coach Dr. Vickie Bhatia comes back to the podcast to unpack why we create hypothetical situations in our head and then get mad about them in real life. We’ll discuss how relationships, trauma, uncertainty, and judgment factor in; where anger really comes from and whether anger is helpful or harmful; the two most common triggers for hypothangry scenarios; and a plan for identifying, interrupting, and moving on gracefully from this behavior.

Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast

Caroline Foran

Millie Mackintosh talks panic attacks, social media and her experience of anxiety

For this bonus episode I was so thrilled to sit down with (virtually) Millie Mackintosh. I have long been a fan of Millie's, particularly since becoming pregnant and seeing how open and honest she is about the experience. She keeps it real. Millie has had her fair share of anxiety down through the years and here she shares her story with me. We talk everything from the Made in Chelsea days when panic attacks were a common experience, to pre and postnatal anxiety, the anxiety of having millions of people watching and judging you on social media, IBS and so much more. As she's about to have her second baby, I'm so grateful to Millie for taking the time to chat and be so honest as always and allow herself to be vulnerable. My books: Owning It: Your BS Free Guide To Living With Anxiety / The Confidence Kit: Your BS Free Guide To Owning Your Fear / NAKED: Ten Truths To Change Your Life all available

The Narcissists' Code

Lee Hammock

Welcome to my podcast. I am a self aware narcissist, I have NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder). I'm known as Mental Healness around the internet but you can call me Lee. I've been dealing with this personality disorder for as long as I can remember and I have been in psychotherapy for the last 4 years. Therapy has helped me to figure out exactly why I do what I do and it has allowed me to get to this point where I can offer you the perspective inside the head of a person battling this personality disorder. You might get triggered, but you'll get validated. @mentalhealness everywhere Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mentalhealness/support
