The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill

Christianity Today

Five days after resigning as lead pastor of Mars Hill Church, Mark Driscoll was once again in front of a crowd—this time, a packed conference of pastors who offered him a standing ovation in support. It only took 474 days for him to announce he was planting a new church in Scottsdale, Arizona.
But while Driscoll wielded his own force of personality to get as much distance from Mars Hill as possible, life in Seattle was a different story. A confused and hurting church was displaced, hundreds of people were out of their jobs, and the fiercest critics of the church practically threw a party.
In our series finale, we follow a few of those threads, which led some people to new ministries, others to new careers, and still others out of the church altogether. We’ll revisit the legacy of Driscoll’s teaching on gender, and we’ll ask whether or not he really preached good news and freedom.
We’ll also look for the presence of Christ, working in surprising and u

Body Image: Overcoming Shame in our Bodies

Shame is something that we were never meant to feel, but because of sin, shame is part of our lives. We feel shame when we believe that something about us is unacceptable. This can be especially prevalent when it comes to our body image. So often, we feel as though our bodies aren’t good enough – they don’t look good enough or don’t function well enough. And it can lead us to deep feelings of shame. In today’s episode, we talk about how Jesus has already overcome that shame on our behalf and how it is truly possible to claim victory in our physical bodies. If you have ever dealt with feelings of shame over your body and want to know how to fight the enemy’s lies, this conversation is for you.  Resources mentioned in this episode:Breaking Free from Body Shame by Jess Connolly   Scripture mentioned in this episode:Genesis 3:7Genesis 3:8Psalm 34:5Matthew 11:28    Connect with us: Subscribe to Daily Grace: on iOS, go to our iTunes page

Timothy Keller Sermons Podcast by Gospel in Life

Tim Keller

Jesus’ Prayer for All Time

We’ve been looking at what the Bible says about prayer and spirituality, and this message concludes the series. We are examining the Lord’s Prayer — the one place in the Bible where Jesus himself is asked about prayer and spirituality. It’s the richest single source of information in the entire Bible on how to pray, not because it’s a case study of someone praying, but more that it’s a model of true prayer for everyone.

We’re going to take a look at this under three headings. 1) What you must have before you pray; 2) What you must do as you pray; and 3) The key to getting them all.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 25, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Matthew 6:5-15.

Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church

God Is Within Her - a women’s devotional podcast

Valarie Reynolds

Welcome to the God Is Within Her Podcast. (formerly known as The Beautifully Enough Podcast!) This is a space for you, as a Christian woman, to mature in your faith, grow a closer relationship with God, and live confidently in Christ! Every week, we will dive into the word of God so we fill our minds with God’s truths, to live, not as the world tells us to live, but to live boldly as Godly women who fear the Lord. DON'T PANIC RETURNING LISTENERS!! This is still the same weekly devotional podcast you fell in love with over the past two years. But God has put it on my heart to pivot and run with a new title that truly embodies the kingdom purpose God has placed on my heart: not to focus on our lack or feelings of inadequacies but to mentor and guide Christian women to realize we can grow a fierce and confident faith in Christ! Titus 2:3-7 instructs the female elders to become “teachers of beautiful things”. The message translation tells women to be “models of goodness”. When we are models of these beautiful things, we will begin to teach other women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, and to be set-apart as a model of a life nobly lived. And, of course, there is Psalm 46, where the title of the podcast comes from. Psalm 46 references the city of God, Zion, and his chosen people, the Jews. The psalmist is writing this song as a beautiful reminder that God is their refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, do not fear. God is within the city, so the city will not fall. But it is also a promise for us, as women of God. Because of Jesus, God is within us every single day, through the Holy Spirit. And if God is for us, who can be against us? God is within her, she will not fall. And that is my prayer over you as you join me in this podcast, that you become a woman who is a model of the beautiful things of the Lord as you grow in your faith and embrace the promise that God is within you.It is time we start the word of God to conquer our fears and doubts that we aren’t enough or we can’t hear God’s voice, and transform into empowered women of God who can overcome any obstacle all in the name of Jesus! If you have been going through the motions of your faith and you’re ready for a mentor to guide you on your daily walk with God, you are in the right place! This is Valarie Reynolds, you’re bestie and mentor, and this is God Is Within Her. Work with me // with me // @val_reynolds Collab with me //

He talks with Phil about his journey from atheism to faith, his role in overseeing the country’s response to Covid-19, and why America’s culture war is literally killing people. Collins also explains why the Covid vaccines are safe and should be embraced by Christians as an answer to prayer. Then, The Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood’s attack on a small Texas church backfires, leading to a conversation about God and gendered language. The editor of World Magazine leaves in protest as yet another evangelical institution takes a sharp turn to the right. Are we witnessing the final fury of a dying religious right? Lynne Wilson: How the Savior Empowered Women

For years, Dr. Lynne Wilson has met with theologians around the world from various faith traditions. She repeatedly heard theories at these meetings that inequality between men and women stemmed from the Bible. She was adamant that inequality was not something Christ taught—instead she believed that Jesus Christ emancipated women. So, she set out to do research to back it up. On this week’s episode, Dr. Wilson shares her research as well as her belief that there is no better place to be as a woman than in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“I just think we’re measuring the wrong things. It’s not about gender, it’s about mutuality and that is what Christ tried to break down in the meridian of time so that men and women and children, old and young, would work together together to build the kingdom.”

#927 - The Scandal of Christmas, Part 2: Dr. Michael Bird

We often think of Luke 1-2 and Matthew 1-2 when we think about the Christmas story. But what about Revelation 12? Is this angle a strange, fringe way of looking at the birth of Jesus, or is a primarily lens? In this episode, Dr. Bird and I look at this less-than-familar way of reading the Christmas story. It’s an angle where the bird of a peasant-King is a battle against the socio-political powers to be, powers that are demonically influenced and stand opposed to the upside down kingdom of God on earth. Michael Bird graduated with a BMin from Malyon College (2001) and Honours and PhD from the University of Queensland (2002, 2005). Michael taught New Testament at the Highland Theological College in Scotland (2005-9) before joining Brisbane School of Theology as lecturer in Theology (2010-12). Practicing the Way

Hurry: The Great Enemy of Spiritual Life | Practicing the Way Vision Series E10

"If you want to experience the life of Jesus, you have to adopt the lifestyle of Jesus."In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus offers a new yoke to his disciples. In this message, John Mark breaks down what it means to pick up the yoke of Jesus and adopt His lifestyle: taking up the easy yoke of Jesus means that we need to slow down. In light of this, John Mark explains how hurry is opposed to the way that Jesus walked and to our spiritual growth, then challenges us to be creative and disciplined in how we "unhurry" our lives. Key Scripture Passages: Matthew 11:28-30; Luke 10:41-42 Visit for more information, resources, and episode transcriptsFacebook, YouTube: Practicing the WayInstagram, TikTok: @practicingthewayTwitter: @practheway

This thinking comes out of a Marxist framing of oppression. Owen believes it’s coming back to the forefront because of big tech and social media. Acts 17:26 shows us we come from one man, Adam. Being Light Bearers for Jesus: Kristin Chenoweth and Sadie Robertson Huff

Have you ever heard the phrase “to whom much is given, much is expected?” In the case of our two guests today, God has gifted them with amazing platforms to reach thousands of people—and they take the responsibility to lead well very seriously. Actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth has graced the Broadway stage as well as movies and television, and she uses her platform to spread faith, hope, and light to everyone she encounters. Sadie Robertson Huff was part of her family’s TV show as a kid and as a young woman went on to find an even bigger audience through her appearance on ABC’s Dancing with The Stars. Both of these women wanted to be faithful to the opportunity given to them to be a light to their followers—and though it’s not always easy, they trust that God will help them when things get hard.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Luke 12:48 NIV Jesus Calling Jesus

Pearls with Kristi McLelland VIDEO

In 2007 the Lord opened the door for me to go study the Bible in Egypt and Israel. I went and learned that the Living God is BETTER than I ever knew. When the Lord gave us the Bible, He gave us a Story. It’s the best and truest Story ever told. Each story is like a pearl, beautiful and of great price on its own. But what’s more beautiful is stringing the biblical pearls together. Through the Bible, we know who the Living God is, what He’s like and what it is to walk with Him. In this teaching podcast, we are going to string 12 of my most favorite biblical pearls together. We do not just read the Bible - we interact with it. It is living and active and so we are we. When we sit down with the Word of God, it is life with life. The Bible is like a great feast. Great food is best experienced with great people. Join me at the biblical table for Episode 1 of Pearls. Charles Eistenstein has had quite the pandemic. Essays read by millions, retweeted by Jack Dorsey, quoted by Ivanka Trump, held up as the poet philosopher of conspirituality—hell, he’s even been on the podcast! Julian tracks the transformative arc of malformed ideas garnished with spiritualized language that has made Eisenstein the romantic mascot of anti-vax, Covid-contrarian wellness. This is how he finds himself now poised to become the mythic storyteller-in-residence of an emerging Austin-based cult of psychedelic bro science and “medical freedom.”

EP 159 How to Get Unstuck

Why are you holding yourself back from the life you long for? From an abundant life full of joy and purpose. From the new career you want to explore, the deeper friendships you long for, a college degree or a healthy loving relationship. Is it because you don’t feel qualified or think that you don’t have what it takes? Maybe it’s because you’re afraid you’ll lose friends by making a big move, get hurt if you put yourself out there in relationships, or that you’ll look like a fool if you fail. We’ve certainly all had those seasons in life where we feel stuck, a bit parazlyed even by our own fear. And no matter what is causing us to be afraid, the way out is to realize that, with God on our side, we have nothing to lose. Fear is natural, but small lives are ruled by big fears. And you were created for a wide-open, expansive life - not a small one. This episode will empower you to confront fear, commit to getting unstuck, and develop the courage to tak

How to Fight the Spiritual Battle: Spiritual Armor

Some professions have specialty clothing . . . and it saves lives. Firefighters have “turnout pants and jackets” to protect against heat. Police officers wear kevlar vests. Soldiers have vests and helmets and boots. As we’ll learn today, Christian soldiers have specialty clothing, as well. But too many of us don’t know much about it. Elephants in the Room Part 4: Facing the Reality of White Privilege and Systemic Racism with Reggie Dabbs & John Driver

Elephants in the room are historically hard to acknowledge and easy to ignore. And though it seems like the conversation about racial divides in our country is getting more attention than it ever has, there are still some of us that are unable to see that there’s a problem in their own ranks. Sometimes, it’s not even that we don’t recognize it looking from the outside in–but a lack of being involved toward change or acknowledging the concept that the white community has historically had a giant leg up on thriving in our country today contributes to the acceptance of the status quo and to the systemic issues that still persist in our country today. White privilege is simply this: because of the color of your skin, there’s an added disadvantage or advantage as to how easy it will be to navigate our world today. Not whether you worked hard or went to colle

Praying for our kids: Discernment

When I read the verses above, it makes me think of how nice it would be to simply hear a voice telling me how to proceed in certain situations and the resulting confidence I would have in knowing that I’m getting it right. And then I’m reminded that the Holy Spirit does just this when we listen expectantly as believers.    My dear friend Stephanie Martin (and one of the most discerning people I know) is joining us today as we pray for discernment in our kids’ lives. We’re talking about teaching our kids to be attentive to God in all things and praying they learn to hear God’s voice in their lives from an early age. Not only is having discernment critical in our kids’ lives—but we’re also praying they have people around them who help them discern truth in all the situations they will face.

What to Expect: The Enlightenment Edition "When the universe picks you, and you put on the magic glasses there's rules that go with them. You can never take them off... you never see things as they're supposed to be, you see things as they are."-Dick Gregory  "When I shut my eyes, I still see it (light) shimmering and shining, softer than soft, more tender than tender, finer than fine.  When the eyes are open, I see the blue rays all around.  Whenever I see anyone, I see first the blue light and then the person.  Whenever I see any thing, I see first the beautiful, subtle rays of Consciousness and then the thing itself.  Wherever my mind happens to turn, I see the world in the midst of this shining mass of Light. The way I see things, whether large or small, demonstrates the truth of the verses of Tukaram, which I have quoted before: "My eyes have been bathed with the lotion of the blue light, and I have been granted divine vi

Ep 34: Encountering God: The Spiritual Discipline of Simplicity

We often think of the spiritual discipline of simplicity as a life of lack or being in constant want. But, actually, living simply is about living freely. It’s about greater availability to Jesus. And when we’re available to Him, when we’re not weighed down by all of our stuff, we’re free to live the greatest adventure of our lives. There is positively nothing on earth like following Christ.
I can’t wait for you to meet my friend Sarah Rodrigues, one of my dearest friends and a co-worker with Justice & Mercy International. She lives in the Amazon and serves the people of the river, many of whom live very simple lives. And, yet, their joy is boundless. She’ll be walking us through Jesus’ miracle of multiplying the loaves and fishes, reminding us that when we offer Jesus the little we have, this is when He often does His greatest miracles.

I Don't Have Enough FAITH to Be an ATHEIST

Dr. Frank Turek

Who is your authority?

As we enter 2022, how do you make decisions about the biggest issues in life? Who or what is your authority? What doctrines are you following? Everyone believes in certain doctrines—truths about reality. Even atheists. These doctrines govern not only what we think but what we do, how we act.

Paul wrote to his disciple, Timothy, "Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers" (1 Tim 4:15-16). Are we really watching our lives and doctrine closely?

Join Frank as he examines that question and the ultimate question, who is your authority? Is it you? Your parents? Your culture? Your government? Your church? Or is it Jesus? This show has some very practical insights and questions you can ask to help you follow Christ and make better decisions.

Healthy Friendships, Loneliness, and Top Qualities to Look for in Friends

Thank you for joining us on this special episode, friends! We have been blessed to have built some great relationships with friends who love Jesus and spur us on to love and good works throughout the years. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t experienced seasons of loneliness and hurt from friendships that have come and gone too. Thankfully, we trust the Lord to bring the right people into our lives at the right season, and He is always faithful to do just that. If you are struggling to find the right circle of people to call friends, ask God to begin bringing them into your life and don’t settle. Quality relationships take work and time to build, but we asked you all for some top qualities you look for in friendships, and it was so encouraging to us as we read your responses, so we wanted to share some of them in this episode. Behind the Song with LOVKN

In this episode of TGC’s Behind the Song, Brett McCracken interviews Phoenix-based singer/songwriter LOVKN about his story, his songwriting process, and his desire for a renaissance of artistically beautiful Christ-centered music.Raised in a creative home, Steven Lufkin was immersed in music and began attending a performing arts school in the sixth grade. From that point on, creativity and excellence were vital in his music, and he sadly found most Christian music uninspiring and inauthentic. Much of his writing explores avant garde approaches to devotional worship and is more akin to music one might hear in a coffee shop than in corporate worship. He now leads a growing worldwide community of artists for creative collaboration and music and worship tours.

The 300th Episode

This week, we’re celebrating a major milestone: 300 episodes. That’s more than 18,000 minutes of tape over six years, featuring thousands of News of the Jews items, hundreds of amazing Jews and Gentiles of the Week, and way too many jokes about Belgium. We’ve been through a lot together, J-Crew. There was the Saran Wrap vs. tin foil fight, the debate over backing into parking spaces, and endless discussions of what activities might accurately be categorized as “Jewish.” We’ve shared stories of conversion and atonement and nose jobs, and performed live shows across the country, from St. Louis to San Diego, and Denver to Detroit. Along the way, our team wrote a book, welcomed three human children and six podcast babies, and even got to be part of a proposal and then a wedding.

Today, we’re celebrating everything that makes Unorthodox the #1 Jewish podcast with a special episode hosted by friend-of-the-show and “Making It” judge Simon Doonan. You’ll

18 - The Three Marks of Existence in Buddhism

The Buddha taught that our existence is marked by impermanence, dukkha, and the illusion of self.  He wasn't telling us this to make us sad, but to spur us into action.  The only permanent thing is "impermanence", but we fail to utterly understand that, and along with the belief we have a permanent, unchanging, and independent "self", we create the actions (Karma) that trap us in the cycle of rebirth which is - you guessed it - dukkha ("suffering").  Through his teachings, he helps us break down the belief in "self", understand impermanence and dependent origination, which helps us change our Karmic actions to ones that don't bind us in rebirth, helps us realize our true peaceful state of Nirvana, and allows us to end Dukkha and the cycle of rebirth.
