Episode 338: Swiatek and Nadal Roll Roland Garros
Ben and Tumaini Carayol meet back up just hours after the men's final at Roland Garros to discuss Rafael Nadal's record extending 14th title here and Iga Swiatek's streak extending 35th win and second French Open title.
We start with Swiatek, who has just been so dominant. Is the field anywhere close to her now? What will it take for a challenger to emerge? And what to make of the strong run by teen phenom Coco Gauff to the final?
Then we switch to the men--how to reconcile Nadal's dominance and his injury malaise? How much longer do we think he has left? And what will Djokovic regret about letting this one slip?
We wrap up with a look at why night sessions were not ready for prime time in Paris, and what to look for as the grass is green on the other side of the English Channel.
Thanks for listening, folks!

Ep. 72 - Finding Your Optimal Intensity
In this episode, Brian and Josh discuss how tennis players can find their optimal level of intensity on the practice court and in matches. The co-hosts outline some of the research concepts relating to Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning (IZOF) and the Inverted-U Theory which shows the relationship between pressure and performance (also known as the Yerkes-Dodson Law). They discuss how tennis players can use mental preparation to control their intensity levels, and review specific ways that tennis players can increase or decrease their levels of intensity on the court during matches.

I’m a high level 3.5 player who competes well against 4.0 but struggles with the pusher/no pace ball at 3.5 which is frustrating. I worry about losing to this type of player." Amy Trask
About six years ago, Lesley wrote a column for CBS saying that it was time to put Amy Trask in the Hall of Fame. As we head into Super Bowl LVI, she feels even more strongly. Amy would never talk about this, but there are things people should know about the first female CEO in NFL history. Raiders commander Al Davis wasn't warm and fuzzy with many people, but he treasured and trusted Amy Trask. One critical area she handled was the financial survival of the team. It was Amy's sole responsibility to secure credit facilities (each for hundreds of millions of dollars) so the team could survive. She also settled all of the Raiders litigation - those who knew Al can imagine how exhausted she must have been! They taped this conversation before the Holidays, and she addressed all kinds of topics - but this idea should not be up for debate.

Episode 39: Medicine Ball Throws (With Lee Taft)
One of my pet peeves is the use of medicine ball throws to simulate ground strokes with sloppy form, too heavy of a med ball, and too demanding footwork. The goal of a performance coach is to improve athletic ability so the tennis player can use that improved athletic ability on the court. We are not trying to make them excellent at difficult to perform drills that do not transfer. Medicine ball training can either support performance or hinder performance. Choose wisely!

Do Tennis Clubs Need A Club Tennis Organization, Like The Parent Teacher Organization?
Every school has one - a PTA or parent teacher association but practically no tennis clubs have a CTO (club tennis association), a CPA (club pro association), or a PCA (player club organization. Why not?The PTA addresses collective concerns of the parents relative to that of the schools ongoing activities. The PTA connects parents and teachers to address their concerns and so could a CTO, CPA, or a PCA. The PTA requests additional teacher support or school support and so could a CTO, a CPA, or a PCA. The PTA provides feedback to the school and its teachers as to how things are going or not going and so could a CTO, CPA or a PCA. The PTA brings in guest speakers, brings in book fairs, and conducts fund raisers and so could ...You get the point, so maybe its time to pursue this helpful association. Thanks for joining us on our journey!TRwww.tennisrockers.com

Ep 115: Jeff McFarland on Jim Courier and GOAT Algorithms
Jeff McFarland is the proprietor of the analytics site HiddenGameOfTennis.com, and like me, he has tried his hand at various mathematical approaches to rank the best players of all time, in both tennis and baseball. We start this jumbo episode by talking about Jim Courier--#107 on my Tennis 128 list--a player with a reputation that outstrips his career record, though both are outstanding. Jeff weighs in on the Courier-Chang comparison, and we talk about how Jimbo's inside-out forehand changed the game. We consider whether the early 1990s were a deceptively weak era, how much weight the slams deserve, which current players are most like Courier, some possible limitations of Elo for GOAT rankings, and--in more than one and half hours of tennis talk--a whole lot more.

Why so many athletes never reach their full potential?
There is a stigma in the field of sport psychology and how it's regarded by athletes as a weakness or as if there is something wrong with them for needing the service. The mental aspect of a struggling athlete is considered a last step when everything else has failed. It’s important to redefine the athlete's belief system to change the outcome. Also, If the result of how well you do as an athlete drives your performance, how would this affect the psychological aspect of the person? Many of these questions are addressed in this episode: What are your beliefs about losing? How do you talk to yourself? How important is it to align your belief system with your goals? Listen and find out how all of these factors affect whether or not an athlete reaches their full potential.
