A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs

Episode 141: “River Deep, Mountain High” by Ike and Tina Turner

Episode 141 of A History of Rock Music in Five Hundred Songs looks at “River Deep Mountain High'”, and at the career of Ike and Tina Turner.  Click the full post to read liner notes, links to more information, and a transcript of the episode.

Also, this episode was recorded before the sad death of the great Ronnie Spector, whose records are featured a couple of times in this episode, which is partly about her abusive ex-husband. Her life paralleled Tina Turner's quite closely, and if you haven't heard the episode I did about her last year, you can find it at https://500songs.com/podcast/episode-110-be-my-baby-by-the-ronettes/. I wish I'd had the opportunity to fit a tribute into this episode too.

Chestnut Roasters, Part 2

In part 2 of this holiday episode of Hit Parade, Chris Molanphy dives deep into radio, streaming and Billboard chart data of some your favorite holiday hitmakers to compare their long legacies to the majority-merry ways they are consumed today. And none has been more condensed by Christmas than another artist who was once famous enough to go by her first name: Brenda. A ’60s chart dominator and double–Hall of Famer, Brenda Lee is now mostly known for that tune about Christmas tree rockin’. How did the legendary “Little Miss Dynamite” become Santa’s little helper? And will she ever pass Mariah and go back to No. 1?

The Velvet Underground Pt V

As we conclude our series on The Velvet Underground we pick back up just after the band had split with one of it's founding members, John Cale. Leaving Lou Reed with full reign of the group in his pursuit for artistic notoriety and respect, but it was the addition of Doug Yule that lead to the release of their third album, the self titled "The Velvet Underground". And as this and their next record "Loaded", failed to reach the charts, the luster begins to fade for Lou, who would leave the group and go on to write the hit he had been striving for his entire career.

Episode #37 – ‘Get Back – Pt. 3 Review’

The final installment of our trilogy, recorded immediately after Part Three of the Get Back documentary began streaming on the Disney+ channel at three in the morning on November 27, 2021.

Only at the last minute did all four Beatles agree to perform on the roof of their Apple headquarters—and, when that happened, it’s a concert for the ages. The peak of the Let It Be movie, how was director Peter Jackson able to elevate it to a whole new level? And what is the verdict on the overall series?

Rock'n'Roll Tattoos

The human body is a remarkably good piece of construction…it has its quirks and shortcomings, but for the most part is a pretty cool thing: functional, durable, and to other humans, attractive…

But there’s always room for improvements and modifications and decorations…archeologists have found mummified remains that are thousands and thousands of years old that’s sport tattoos…

There’s a guy named Otzl that was found in the Swiss Alps when a glacier melted…he’d been there for over 5,000 years—and the dude had 61 tattoos…

Egyptian mummies plus pacific islanders, members of ancient African communities, bodies dating to iron age Britain, early Japanese societies, and the Indigenous people of North and South America have all engaged in this kind of body art…

Tattoos have also been used to identify prisoners and slaves, to display religious connections, and associations with armies, navies, bikers, and criminal gangs…

The History of Corder Drums with Don Corder

Corder Drums was born in 1979 when Jim Corder purchased the Fibes manufacturing equipment from C.F. Martin after they decided to no longer be in the drum business. My guest is Don Corder, Jim's son, was an employee since day one and helped his dad and brothers learn on the fly and create a drum brand that is now a part of the history of the instrument. Not only is this a great story because of the Fibes and Darwin drums connection, but it is a wonderful story of a family working together to make Jim Corders dreams a reality.

Composers Datebook

American Public Media

The productive Mr. Donizetti and Mr. Williams

Synopsis
The comic opera “Don Pasquale” by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti had its first performance in Paris on this date in the year 1843. To this day it remains one of his best-loved and most often-performed works. In all, Donizetti wrote about 70 operas, sometimes turning out four per year.
Amazing as this seems today, it wasn’t at all uncommon in the 19th century, especially in Italy, where audience demand for new works was insatiable. Back then, when composers vied with one another for speed, Donizetti was asked if he believed that Rossini had written “The Barber of Seville” in only 13 days. “Why not?” quipped Donizetti, “He’s so lazy!”
In our time,  the corollary of a busy opera composer like Donizetti might be a hard-pressed Hollywood composer like John Williams, who could quip that Donizetti was the lazy one.  After all, John Williams has surpassed Donizetti’s count of 70 operas with

Sounding History

Chris Smith, Tom Irvine

Sounding History is a podcast about the global history of music with an unexpected twist. Your hosts, music historians Tom Irvine and Chris Smith, explore sonic impacts of the extraction of resources from the Earth’s environment. Instead of narrating music history as a story about performers, composers, and works, we explore how extraction economy (and the historical processes that came with it, such as settler colonialism, enslavement, and environmental destruction) made the world of sound we live in today. In each episode we introduce two "postcards": sonic micro-histories that illustrate how music can be understood through stories about labor (how we work), energy (how we power their lives), and data (how we consume and transfer information). We use this categories to explore new layers of narrative about music on a global scale. Our goal is a music history for a new era: the Anthropocene, the age of human-generated climate change. We work as researchers and university teachers in the US and Britain. But between us we have long experience outside of the ivory tower, as musicians in styles from folk to early music, as radio hosts, and public speakers. In Sounding History we turn to the new medium of podcasting, looking to share with listeners stories about people and their soundworlds that have not been heard before. Tom teaches at the University of Southampton in the UK and is also a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national research institute for data science and AI. Chris directs the Vernacular Music Center at Texas Tech University. Between us we have written and edited books about the history of music and dance in the United States, the soundscapes of the Western Encounter with China, and the global history of German music. Sounding History, and the book project that goes with it (a global music history of music for general readers). Sounding History is not our first collaboration. Decades ago, we worked together in public radio and performed together in early music ensembles, laying a groundwork of curiosity and spontaneity for our partnership today. Join us as we take up this new collaboration, a music history for our times.

Punky Reggae Party - How The Drum Machine Changed The Sound Of Reggae

Welcome to “Punky Reggae Party” a special audio documentary series of the Ska Boom podcast that focuses on the historical origins and impact of reggae on popular music that will explore the phenomenon of punk and post-punk bands adopting the sounds of reggaeThough drum and bass rhythms drive the various eras of ska, rocksteady, reggae, 2-Tone, dancehall and beyond, drums and drummers have defined each distinct phase.  And like the divide in rock music that occurred in the mid 70's when synthesizers and drum machines began to make their way into pop and post-punk music, reggae also had a similar moment when the very first drum machine arrived on the island in the mid-70's and slowly became dominant during the early 80's with the advent of the Sleng Teng riddim that was driven by a Casio keyboard drum pre-set. In this episode I’m going dig into the history of drum machines and how they changed

God Help the Troubadour: The Eternal Voice of Phil Ochs

Tori Nelson

Called “one of the greatest poets that ever lived” by Neil Young, singer-songwriter Phil Ochs has been sitting in the footnotes of musical history for the past half century. So, why make a podcast about a musician buried in relative obscurity since his untimely death in 1976? Simple. His songs could have been written a week ago. From his days as a “singing journalist” in the early sixties, to the experimental baroque-pop of “Pleasures of the Harbor”, to the seventies’ gold suit (a la Elvis Presley) rock & roll era, Phil bled into his music. Listen as we explore his music and its continued relevance, and ride the rollercoaster that is Phil’s life story, packed with drama, turmoil, and intrigue, about the troubadour who tried to be a star.

EMM 45: The Art of Impossible | High Achievement in Early Music

If you have ever thought that you are not creative or that "making it big" is impossible, today's episode is for you. There are two false choices taught in the world. It's either "Go live your dream" or "don't pursue your dream, do something practical". I seek to find the middle of ";pursue your dream, but it's going to be insanely hard and require grit and creativity". Making Early Music a career would not fall in the category of stable, smart, or lucrative, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. It might just look a little different than your initial expectations. www.soundofageschoir.comHere is a link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the+art+of+impossible&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4b2MBhD2ARIsAIrcB-SWBkTla1syL1mt1k4jW453qgqMEcbFmAq3B38ezDkkWCc0Qo16820aAudxEALw_wcB&hvadid=241900559643&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9029857&hvnetw=g&hvqm

Kentopop

As lead singer with the 1960’s chart-topping Mod-Soul outfit Love Affair, Steve’s vocals had the kind of powerhouse range that made you sit up and notice.

Released in 2018 - it was a mix of new songs and covers, recorded at Black Barn (Weller HQ) with guests and long-time friends including Paul (who also produced the album) along for the ride.

The album also has loads of lovely Weller connections - with band-members Andy Crofts, Ben Gordelier, Steve Pilgrim, Steve Cradock and Charles Rees (Black B

WJSV September 21, 1939

I'm paying for this page, so I might as well use it during the hiatus.
I'm a radio nerd, and every September 21st I listen to this from start to finish.
It's The full broadcasting day from sign on to sign off of WJSV 1460 AM, Washington, D.C, on Thursday, September 21, 1939.
I like to share, so here it is. Giving you a week advance so you can download it, and have it ready to go on the 21st.

If you start playing it at 6 am, and let it go, the time announcements should line up with the actual time.

Clásica FM - Música Clásica

Hoy Toca: El Oboe Barroco

Beyond The Beat

Jared Linnen

Welcome to Beyond The Beat. I’m Jared Linnen, and in this podcast, I will be diving deep into how some of the biggest and baddest albums were made. It’s the stories, the adversities these bands and artists had to overcome, and how these people got to that place in time where they were able to create a masterpiece of an album. Beyond the Beat is meant to be a long-form podcast, combining my two favourite passions, music and history.
