Dolly Parton's America

WNYC Studios & OSM Audio

In this intensely divided moment, one of the few things everyone still seems to agree on is Dolly Parton—but why? That simple question leads to a deeply personal, historical, and musical rethinking of one of America’s great icons. Join us for a 9-episode journey into the Dollyverse. Hosted by Jad Abumrad. Produced and reported by Shima Oliaee. Dolly Parton’s America is a production from OSM Audio and WNYC Studios.

Flip It and Reverse It Part 2

What was in the water in Virginia Beach? Starting in the ’90s and peaking in the ’00s, Pharrell Williams, Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley and Missy Elliott—friends and family from the Tidewater Region—made nerdy pop normal on the charts. Their productions whirred, gurgled, pinged and rumbled—the handiwork of studio geeks—while their lyrics embraced the freaky: Missy demanding that you work it…Pharrell declaring he’s a hustler, baby…Timbaland bringing sexy back.

Join host Chris Molanphy as he explains how these three supa-dupa fly Virginia Beach geniuses helped us get our freak on. For over two decades, they never left you without a dope beat to step to.

The Last Hours Of...

At some point, all of us will shuffle off this mortal choir and join the choir invisible…doesn’t matter who you are, how much money you may have or how famous you might be…in the end, we’re all mortal…

This really hits home when musicians we love disappear forever…it’s not like we personally know these people, but because their music helps us know ourselves, a little piece of us dies with them…

The circumstances of their passing’s vary…misadventure, accidents, overdoses, suicide…some can be explained away while other deaths will forever remain a mystery…

With that in mind, let’s take a look back on the last hours of some of those musician’s who have left us…

Mendelssohn's Second

In the middle of the 15th century, a German printer by the name of Johann Gutenberg invented a method of printing from moveable type cast in metal. His invention revolutionized the way books were printed, and the widespread dissemination of Gutenberg Bibles made him famous in Europe.
In the summer of 1840, the city of Leipzig planned to unveil a new statue of Gutenberg, and commissioned composer Felix Mendelssohn for two new works. The first, for two choirs, would accompany the unveiling of the statue of Gutenberg, and would take place in the city’s open marketplace after the morning church service on June 24th. The following day, June 25th, there would be a gala concert in Leipzig’s St. Thomas Church featuring the church choir and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performing a new symphony by Mendelssohn.
Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2, entitled “Lobgesang,” or “Hymn of Praise,” is modeled on Beethoven’s Ninth, openi

The Story Behind How They Might Be Giants Built a "Birdhouse in Your Soul"

The transition from 1980s new wave and hair rock to 1990s far less follically-minded indie pop wasn’t always a smooth one. But enigmatic, idiosyncratic, and frequently non-grammatical duo They Might Be Giants made it all go down so easy with instantly catchy hooks and frequently hilarious lyrics.
The band’s tongue-in-cheek non-sequiturs and unconventional instrumentation masked a knack for writing songs that made us hum the first time we heard them. Nowhere is that more evident than in their major label breakout hit “Birdhouse in Your Soul” from their 1990 album Flood, which is likely the first -- and only -- song ever sung from the POV of a night light. Yes, you read that right: The lyrics are from the perspective of a blue night light shaped like a canary -- something that only co-Giants John Linnell and John Flansburgh could pull off.

This episode is all about the musicians who inspired the famous British Invasion drummers of the 1960's well before the music reached American soil. Daniel takes us through the 1950's in England to learn about the circumstances that created the famous Rock and Roll sounds that swept across the world, and we learn the geographic factors such as growing up in the completely bombed out post-WW2 England. Plus the impact that the first wave of touring American Rockstars had on the young impressionable musicians of the UK.

Episode 109: Eli Lake / Prince [Part 1]

Eli’s Music Pick: PrinceDearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called Life. Electric word, "Life," and it's a mighty long time, but I'm here to tell you, there's something else: Prince Rogers Nelson. Known to the world by his first name, Prince was a self-made musical polymath who performed the singular trick of somehow altering the world to accommodate his eccentricity and musical genius rather than the other way around. We know Prince in our cultural memory as one of the classic 1980s MTV megastars alongside Madonna, Michael, and Bruce, but what is less appreciated is just how remarkable it is that he managed to vault himself so easily into that rarified company despite being so unapologetically weird.A Minneapolis kid who refused to ever give up his roots, Prince was so determined to carve his own path through the musical world of the late Seventies and Eighties that he recorded nearly every s

Off The Record: David Bowie

Epilogue: Lazarus (2013-2016)

Our final episode on the life (or lives) of David Bowie begins and ends with a birthday. We start in 2013, when David reentered public life nearly a decade after his heart attack with the surprise release of “Where Are We Now," his first new song in a decade. It was one of the most stunning comebacks in music history. Most fans assumed that David had simply retired from the industry, content to live out the rest of his days as a father, husband, and anonymous New Yorker. Instead, he'd recorded an entire album of new material called 'The Next Day' entirely in secret. Even at age 66, he still had the power to shock. The story concludes with 'Blackstar.' Released the day David turned 69 in January of 2016, it’s an album that many believe was his parting gift as he faced down the illness that would claim his body two days later. Was this a knowing goodbye? We'll examine the evidence and conflicting theories. Intentional or not, it’s a fitting f

At the end of the 13 show Baker’s Dozen, a run filled with jams, bustouts, debut covers, and zero repeats, Phish was awarded a banner to commemorate the event that would hang in the rafters of MSG among legendary sports achievements. And yet, like with the best moments in Phish history, the band didn’t simply sit back and admire their accomplishment, they used it to push themselves forward. Just as the Dick’s 2012 run inspired a return to jamming and setlist deconstruction, all of which built towards The Baker’s Dozen, the BD in turn has inspired Phish over the past five years to push through musical barriers, furthering their improvisational capabilities & pushing their music in ways no one thought possible.  In the Season Finale of Undermine S3 we assess what The Baker’s Dozen meant & how it inspired Phish to attack 2018 and 2019, while also laying the groundwork for one of the best years of their career - 2021. Breaking Waves: Seattle

Episode 4: Can You Hear Us? The New Puget Sound

In the finale of Breaking Waves: Seattle, we look at the collapse of the scene in 1997, and how Seattle struggled to find a new musical identity. From the ashes of grunge, a new scene began to form, focused around emerging genres such as indie rock and electronic music.

We wrap up the series by looking at the legacy of grunge, and examine the bands that followed, and new artists who are taking Seattle in new musical directions. We’ll hear from Ben Gibbard, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Ayron Jones, Eva Walker, label executive Josh Rosenfeld, and many others as they describe how Seattle’s current wave of musicians have continued to build from the DIY foundation created by the pioneers of the ‘90s. Enigmatic, secretive, loudmouth, genius, egotistical maniac... this episode's artist had been called everything in the book, but he never let it stop him from reaching for the stars, whether that be lyrically dense verses, old timey gospel, stadium sing alongs, or moody synthpop. And though we could spend hours dissecting his many controversial statements and actions, today we're staying true to the music as we dive into the diverse, and ever exciting catalog of Kanye West. Reconstructing The Classics, Volume 1

A new series!

What if you were able to take a handful of your least favourite tracks on some Macca LP's and replace them with outtakes/b-sides from the same era. What would you take out and replace?

This week on 2Legs, Tom & Andy are joined by our "frenemy", Mr. Sam Whiles (Paul Or Nothing Podcast), "Macca In Your Attic" (YouTube) as we pick 3 songs off of London Town, Flowers In The Dirt and Off The Ground and replace them with our alternate tracks.

This was a little fun exercise for a new series that we will definitely be revisiting. Thank you once again Sam!

All the best, Tom & Andy

Wild Rivers is a Canadian three-piece band. Their thoughtful and introspective songs have insightful looks into the human condition. Their most recent record touches on coming of age themes and blend them with beautiful melodies and harmonies. The album was recorded during the pandemic and the band had to adapt to a new way of doing things. And the results are fantastic. I had a chance to chat with guitar player Khalid about the songs. I hope you dig it!

Blues Disciples

Jamie Anthony

Each Blues Disciples podcast has a primary purpose to entertain and then to help listeners better understand the importance of the blues music genre in our history and culture. We let our listeners know of the incredible obstacles faced by generations of blues artists as they struggled to raise themselves from the poverty and oppression they faced as tenant farmers in the South. These early blues artists were self-taught for the most part and we highlight their commitments and creativity that increased their audience and differentiated them from their peers. Each podcast contains short discussions of the upcoming artists, the songs and some career highlights prior to playing each song within an 11 – 14 song playlist (podcasts recorded prior to Show #10 have fewer songs). From time to time, we interview current blues artists and highlight their music during a podcast. With each tune we play, we now identify the artist and composer and note the dates of the composition and performance.

Morgan Taylor

An oral history podcast about and with members of Trip Shakespeare, a Minneapolis-based quartet who earned a loyal cult following for their playful but literate alternative art-pop. In early 1985 when Harvard anthropology grad Elaine Harris answered an ad looking for "wicked percussion hands" posted by English major Matt Wilson. Harris and Wilson would relocate to Wilson's hometown of Minneapolis and found Trip Shakespeare, along with John Munson, a Chinese-language major at the University of Minnesota. After issuing a debut LP, 1986’s “Applehead Man,” on local label Gark Records, the band soon expanded to include Dan Wilson, a graduate student in art and Matt's elder brother. With a more fleshed-out harmonic sound the band released their second album, 1988’s “Are You Shakesperienced?” on Gark, then Twin/Tone. In late 1989, the band signed with A&M, releasing “Across the Universe” in April of 1990, followed by “Lulu” in September of 1991. With each subsequent release the group showed off a maturing command of its unique approach to the pop music form with increasingly higher production values and studio experimentation. Neither album could match the success they achieved as a live touring act, and after Trip Shakespeare recorded a six-song EP of cover tunes entitled Volt, A&M rejected the project and dropped the band. (Twin/Tone records would belatedly release Volt in 1994.) Elaine relocated to her hometown in the Boston area. Matt Wilson continues to write and record his music through various solo and band projects. Dan and John went on to form the band Semisonic, scoring a hit with the now-classic 90’s alt-rock single “Closing Time.” Podcast host Morgan Taylor plays together with Munson in the Grammy-nominated music-and-art project Gustafer Yellowgold.

The Bluegrass Situation

Shelby: Local Legends Breathe New Life into Small Town

The image of bluegrass is mountain music played and heard at high altitudes and towns like Deep Gap and remote mountain hollers across the Appalachians. But the earliest form of the music originated at lower elevations, in textile towns across the North Carolina Piedmont. As far back as the 1920s, old-time string bands like Charlie Poole's North Carolina Ramblers were playing an early form of the music in textile towns, like Gastonia, Spray, and Shelby - in Cleveland County west of Charlotte. In this second episode of Carolina Calling, we visit the small town of Shelby: a seemingly quiet place, like most small Southern towns one might pass by in their travels. Until you see the signs for the likes of the Don Gibson Theatre and the Earl Scruggs Center, you wouldn’t guess that it was the town that raised two of the most influential musicians and songwriters in bluegrass and country music: Earl Scruggs, one of the most i

Chris Bangs has been a pioneering and inspirational figure in the British underground dance scene and helped to light up the burgeoning black music dance scene of the early eighties.

Towards the end of the 80s, Chris really hit pay dirt as a musical trend-setter with the invention of Acid Jazz genre and as a producer and artist responsible for many early recordings on Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz label and Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud (producing Galliano's celebrated debut album).

His talents were soon spotted outside of the acid jazz scene with Paul Weller utilising Chris' production skills on one of the stand out tracks from his debut solo album - Above The Clouds.

Franz Schubert & The Poets Of His Time

DescriptionFranz Schubert in just eleven years (1797-1828) wrote over 600 songs. He set some of the greatest poets of his time to music. Some of them were even contemporary minor poets who were his friends. The greatest poet of Schubert’s age was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. One of the most dramatic of Schubert’s vocal works was the setting of Goethe’s poem, The Erlking, Der Erlkönig.  Join me, Steven Hobé, as we take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactMore than 10,000 of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s letters are still in existence as are nearly 3,000 drawings. He was a literary celebrity by age 25. A recent reviewer of a new biography of Goethe noted wryly that if Goethe had lived during the age of Shakespeare, we’d be wondering if there were one Goethe or if there were many, now confused under one name.About StevenSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. Episode 56: Nariko Ott (stand-up comic / friend) and Jason talking Jan 6th one year anniversary.

Episode 56 is a TMpod first: I'm dropping this one the same day it was recorded. This one is fresh out of the pod oven!
My guest Portland based stand-up comic Nariko Ott is one of my favorite comics, a good friend and someone whose class conscious politics always resonate with me. Even though we're talking about the Jan 6th attempted coup and the rising fascist tide in America we still manage to have some laughs and share hopeful ideas about how to survive and win in our increasingly dystopian reality.
Check out Nariko's instagram and twitter and go see him live whenever you have the chance, dude is a RIOT!
THANK YOU SO MUCH to all of you for listening, telling a friend and for SUPPORTING the TraegerMethod podcast.

BONUS EPISODE! Paul's 80th Birthday - A Paul appreciation chat and song discussion with guest Sean Nelson

We've been on a break between seasons, but being Paul McCartney's 80th birthday, we felt we wanted to contribute our little part to the conversation and global love fest. When our friend and previous guest, musician Sean Nelson reached out and asked if we wanted to chat about our favorite Paul songs, it seemed the perfect way to do so. There's certainly no shortage of words being written to sing his praise, but to us, the best way to show our appreciation is with his music. What can be said that hasn't been said 1000 times already? Probably a lot really, there's so much to talk about with the Beatles, especially Paul, who continues creating and working into his's 8th decade.
So we each chose our top 5 Paul Beatle songs and top 5 post Beatle Paul songs. The songs aren't ranked the same way we normally do them. Jonathan's Beatle songs are more a "top 5 unapprecia

History of Jazz - Part 4

Great Billie Taylor explains the origin of jazz in the United States.
Billy Taylor was an American jazz pianist, composer, broadcaster and educator. He was the Robert L. Jones Distinguished Professor of Music at East Carolina University in Greenville, and from 1994 was the artistic director for jazz at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
A jazz activist, Taylor sat on the Honorary Founders Board of The Jazz Foundation of America, an organisation he started in 1989, with Ann Ruckert, Herb Storfer and Phoebe Jacobs, to save the homes and the lives of America's elderly jazz and blues musicians, later including musicians who survived Hurricane Katrina.
Taylor was also a jazz educator, who lectured in colleges, served on panels and travelled worldwide as a jazz ambassador. Critic Leonard Feather once said, "It is almost indisputable that Dr. Billy Taylor is the world's foremost spokesman for jazz.&quo

The History of WFL Drums with Kurt Ekstrom

WFL Drums was born in 1937 when William F. Ludwig sold the company and rights to use his name to CG Conn and he became a competitor with Ludwig and Ludwig Drums. Kurt is an expert on this roughly 18-year period where William F. Ludwig and The Chief (William II) operated out of the Damen Ave factory as WFL Drum Co. and created beautiful drum sets and hardware that are still revered today. We discuss the initial opening of the factory, the war-time era, and the eventual purchase of the Ludwig name back from Conn in the mid-1950s. Epi 74 FAN CAMPAIGN: “Let’s get another number #1 INXS song”!

The 25th anniversary of the incomparable Michael Hutchence sad passing.

As such, we are proud to launch a unique fan-led initiative whereby we are championing the “re-emergence” of the severely underrated song “Not Enough Time” from the aforementioned album.

A song that simply soars after its humble and understated opening, to a cacophony of musical, vocal and instrumental bliss. A crescendo in the spirit of Hey Jude and Stairway to Heaven, all un
