Jun 21 - Don't Say "Recession!" It's a "Transition"

Biden's so-called "Transition" Is A Real WRECK

The President fell off his bike - and let's just say, that wreck has become quite a metaphor for the U.S. economy.

In today's program, I'm examining the new language surrounding our recession coming from the White House. It's just... a "transition" they tell us. NOT a Recession. Got it?

Meanwhile, the Energy Secretary is promising another "transition" -- to Green Energy. Well, that's not going so smoothly now, is it?
In sum, that bike wreck may have been the tipping more ways than one.

What's the Impact of the Pharmacy Benefit Manager Transparency Act of 2022

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) introduced the Pharmacy Benefit Manager Transparency Act of 2022 on May 24, which would make it illegal for PBMs to engage in “spread pricing.” Spread pricing occurs when PBMs charge health plans and payers more for a prescription drug than what they reimburse to the pharmacy — and then keep the difference. The PBM then charges the health insurance plan $100 for processing the same prescription. The spread of $10 is pocketed by the PBMs. Related: New PBM players banking on drug pricing transparency for success The bipartisan legislation would empower the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to increase drug pricing transparency and hold pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) accountable for unfair and deceptive p

How Rescuing People Hurts Them

In business, it sometimes happens that someone is required to perform a task that’s beyond their capability. While it might seem like the entrepreneur or team leader should step in and help in such a case, doing so can actually get in the way of the individual and the team growing their capabilities. In this episode, Dan Sullivan shares a way to handle failures that will benefit the future of the entire organization.

2. Beyond NIL: Will College Sports Become a Free Market?

The new era of name, image, and likeness in college sports has seen rapid change. For instance, initially athletes were signing deals directly with brands and companies. Now, so-called “NIL collectives” are amassing multi-million-dollar funds to attract star recruits. Critics say these funds are being used as back-door recruiting inducements which violate the NCAA’s interim NIL policy.
Many college coaches and administrators have complained that the interim policy is vague and unenforceable. But that may be just the beginning thanks to several new cases progressing in both federal court and at the National Labor Relations Board. Either could potentially alter the landscape even further—making college sports a completely free market or redefining some college teams as employees of the schools they play for.
In the final episode of our two-part series on NIL in college sports we speak with:

John Quinn On Why Big Law Should 'Work From Anywhere'

As the pandemic started to ease, big law leaders worked to fine-tune their remote work policies. Should lawyers be in the office two days a week? Three? Quinn Emanuel had another idea—never.
The Los Angeles-based firm, led by its iconoclastic founder, John Quinn, embraced a work-from-anywhere policy. Quinn says it wasn't without its challenges, but that he's glad his namesake firm made this move. At the very least, he says, he hopes it will spur disgruntled attorneys working at more inflexible firms to send him their résumés.
On this week's episode of our weekly podcast, On The Merits, Quinn speaks to Bloomberg Law's Roy Strom about why Quinn Emanuel is going all in on the remote work trend within Big Law. He also talks about why he thinks a tremendously profitable 2021 was not a fluke for the litigation-focused Quinn Emanuel.

Doug Boles is the Speedway’s chief evangelist

As most racing fans know, Doug Boles is president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But that title isn’t quite adequate.
Boles is the Speedway’s chief evangelist, its omnipresent public face and its buck-stops-here customer service guru. Beyond presiding over the day-to-day management of a 300-acre venue that hosts dozens of large, complicated events annually, Boles is the protector of its legacy as Indy’s symbol of industry and speed, while lifting its vital role in the city’s aspirations to create strong connections between innovative industries.
And that’s important, although to thousands of fans on race day, he is the guy in the suit and tie who remembers your family and where you traditionally sit and is happy as hell to take a picture with you, the kids, grandpa and the cooler.
In this week's podcast, host Mason King talks with Boles about what his daily life is like in May, why he calls race fans every day

Will summer solstice provide investors solace?

Wall Street seemed set to begin this short trading week with solid gains on the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere. That would certainly provide solace for investors still reeling after last week's precipitous drops, not to mention the continued recession warnings from the likes of Goldman Sachs and Elon Musk. The latter opined that a recession is more likely than not. And US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warns prices will remain unacceptably high through the rest of the year. Julia and her guests cover those thorny topics and others in the Tuesday edition of First Move.

Finally, while the Fed seeks to reign in inflation, April CPI numbers show it still remains elevated. Where is inflation getting better and where is it still rising?

Shrinkflation ? — Ontario has a new law regulating financial advisors. Shrinkflation is everywhere. And interest rates are probably going up.

Last month, Ontario became the first province to create a law that protects everyday investors from unqualified financial professionals, per The Globe and Mail. “All that and a bag of chips” isn't the compliment it once was, as bags of chips contain fewer salty morsels than ever thanks to “shrinkflation.” The Bank of Canada (BoC) is set to hike interest rates further today, with experts agreeing it will likely be the first “oversized” hike in over two decades—going up half a percentage point instead of the typical quarter percentage point.

The Equalizer Project Podcast

Brenda Ross Dulan

How do we fix historic inequities that continue to plague people of color… particularly in Corporate America? It is clear that our citizens are no longer comfortable with the traditional approaches to addressing systemic challenges – i.e. ones that contain the “right language and practices” but are mostly symbolic and ultimately, yield slow, and often, insignificant change. And so, this podcast, The Equalizer Project was born. Through conversations with leaders who can share rich, complex, and powerful experiences of life in the corporate world, I hope to bring awareness, to heal, to inspire and to leave the audience with hope and a solution, yes, a solution! It is part of my calling or personal mission – to change lives and to leave others better off. This is the work of The Equalizer Project.
