Dr. Laver discusses Grant's early failures, temperament, and baptism by fire, which led to his later successes in the war. We trace Grant's Civil War career, from the Trans-Mississippi theater to the surrender in Virginia. Finally, we conclude by examining his presidency briefly and debating his legacy.
