If you're interested in using breathwork to balance the nervous system, whether using Wim Hof method, pranayama, or other common breathing exercises, it's important to understand that some types of breathwork can actually further exacerbate states of stress and tension - sympathetic nervous system dominance. Using force and control to manipulate breathing has many benefits, but ultimately will often strengthen a sympathetic nervous system dominant stress response in the body and mind.

For me personally, using principles of Taoist breathing methods has been one of the only ways I've managed to continuously transition into a parasympathetic, deeply calm and grounded state. Observing the breath and surrendering into it versus controlling the breath can be a subtle shift, with profound effects.
