The Tension Between the Self and the Collective In Pinocchio: Learning From Archetypes as Business Owners with Paige Easter

Release Date:

Today, in our third episode analyzing the myths, the symbols, and the metaphors in Disney movies, we take a deeper look at the story of the wooden boy, Pinocchio. Paige joins me again to explore the novel written by the Italian journalist and writer Carlo Collodi, published entirely for the first time in 1883, right at the beginning of the second phase of the industrial revolution. As usual, we compare the original version with the one recreated by Disney, where we can observe both the adaptations made to fit the modern world and the sticky metaphors that transcended time.  We explore the story's invitation to reflect on cultural clashes, the desirable attributes an individual should aspire to have to become a contributor to society's flow, and the tension between self-centeredness and community. We also navigate the subtle difference between selfishness and self-centeredness, the negative connotation society attributes to the latter, and the fascinating way fairy tales model and shape heroic attributes and characteristics. In This Episode, You Will Learn:A quick recap of Pinocchio's journey (2:34)About the historical context of the book and how society worked back then (5:09)The tension between the individual and society.
