“One thing that activism has taught me is to use my voice...I can share photographs about what I’m doing but also tell a story. We come from a storytelling tradition and I think that more of our voices need to be out there.” Guarina Lopez (Pascua Yaqui) is a visual artist, mother, runner, cyclist, and the founder of Native Women Ride. As a lifelong Indigenous activist and environmentalist, she utilizes photography, film, and writing to share stories of the land and Indigenous communities. In the episode, Guarina tells us about growing up in New Mexico (among other places), the ways her childhood shaped her, and her journey as a woman of color in running and cycling. With years of experience in museums, non-profits, and institutions of higher education, Guarina has a strong presence in the running community with several initiatives that highlight underrepresented communities and center anti-racist work.
