Release Date:

In May 2021, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava appointed Jane Gilbert to serve as the county’s first Chief Heat Officer making Jane the first Chief Heat Officer in the world! Florida residents are used to the heat, but as climate change continues, we will feel it even more. Previously, Floridians averaged approximately 7 days a year when the heat index would reach 105. By mid-century, that number is expected to rise to 88 days a year. This represents not only a health risk to many, but also has a significant economic impact. During this episode, Jane shares how they are partnering with all areas of local government to create infrastructure for heat emergencies, plant more trees, and educate the general public about their needs and rights.
