Understanding gender diversity

Release Date:

It’s common for children to experiment with gender roles throughout childhood. However, up to two per cent of Australians identify as transgender or gender diverse. Being trans or gender diverse is part of the natural spectrum of human diversity.

In this episode, we sit down with Associate Professor Michelle Telfer, Director the Gender Service at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. As well as understanding a little more about just what gender diversity is, we cover how parents can support their children and others through their journey and where to seek help if your child is experiencing distress.

You can find more information through the RCH Gender Service and our Kids Health Info factsheet on gender dysphoria. Further information and support can also be found through Transcend, queerspace, minus18 and Parents of Gender Diverse Children.

We love to hear from our listeners with their questions. Keep an eye out on our Facebook and Instagram pages for opportunities to be involved in upcoming episodes. Visit our website to find out how you can sign up to our newsletter and keep up-to-date with our latest episodes.
