Let’s consider the blessings we withhold from our friends who offer to help and we refuse because we “should” be able to “do it all” ourselves. Motherhood is not meant to be done in a silo, and our Islamic traditions exemplify community caring for children.The effects of absorbing those pressures from without and within can wreak havoc on mothers’ mental health and we insist on outsourcing and asking for/accepting help. It’s hard to acknowledge that we really cannot do it all, but we shouldn’t be expected to do it all. Definitely not all at once. Why is that considered successful anyway??? Work smart, not hard, so we can prevent mommy burnout and show up 100% for our kids, NOT for the cultural narratives that unequally burden mothers more than other members of the family.
