43: How Charis Rooda Moved To A New Country With Zero Network and Plenty of Fear To Becoming A Successful Founder and Producer of Webconf.asia Events

FWEP00043 Charis Rooda Today we have a very special guest. Her name is Charis Rooda. The owner and organizer of Hong Kong's most popular web conference, Webconf.asia! Webconf.asia is a non-profit conference for people who build websites, with the goal of bringing together and inspiring the web community in Asia.  Conference she organizedIt may be hard on the beginning but success will come if you don’t give up. When you love what you’re doing the hardship doesn’t matter anymore because you know you can do it. (1:38-2:02) I used to organize a conference in Amsterdam and when I came here I wanted to do the same but it takes you like a few years to kinda find out how and look for a community works and I looked around and I organize few meet-ups and I decided I’m just gonna do it, and I started little or less than a year ago and my conference was a month ago or so and it went really well.  (2:11-2:20) As a sponsor we had Microsoft, we had Mozilla we had Fastly, IPGP there are quite a lot of good sponsors.  How you get started?Everything is impossible if you believe in yourself. Always think of plans. Don't be afraid to start without having anything and learn from your experiences. (2:35-2:40) I think the main thing is you need to meet a lot of people. I went to a lot of meet-ups coming to concerts where there are a lot of people. (2:50-3:00) I need to steal a lot of people about your idea and you tell them that you have really big plans and you kinda hope that they wanna join you on that. (3:04-3:26) I just really really wanted it. And I think you just start or I just really want to make this happen. I was kinda building websites is really cool but it doesn’t satisfy as much as learning in events. You do research and you just start. (3:43-3:54) I started with getting my venue and it was a very big struggle because I didn’t have a good network to find an event.            (4:02-4:14)  You just start to invite people and slowly, slowly bit by bit it’s coming together and then you’re like awake for many nights because you’re really afraid that you won’t sell any tickets and so you do a lot of promos and then tickets start selling. How do you manage your fear?The best way to beat problems is to face and work on them. Making yourself busy is a good way on how to overcome struggles. Don't let them distract you from your dreams. (4:36-4:52) I think the best way to kind of reduce my fear is to work on it cause when you’re busy trying to sell those tickets you’re not really afraid you won’t sell them. So I was just making a lot of hours to make sure that I sold them. (4:57-5:12) Talk to a lot of people. I think, still, at least, Hong Kong is still really offline so I talked to a lot of people told them it is going to be really good. Like, in the end, I just told people it’s going to be really good, just buy your tickets. (5:52-6:07) When you do something like that just ask people to help you because it might be in the beginning you might not wanna do that because people love to help and as soon as you start to reach out to people. How do you realized that people love to help?(6:46-7:02) I think once kinda people start offering it to you then you think like I can just do it like there are lot of stuff you can actually just do but it’s doesn’t feel like you’re just too shy to do that. You shouldn’t be. What is a woman of influence for you?As a woman, you are expected to have goals in life. Through that expectation, every woman becomes strong and motivated in achieving their passion.  (8:38-8:42) I kinda like it when women do stuff their own way. (9:17-9:23) I think always like, starting is the most difficult part and once it’s running it’s gonna be fine.  (9:41-9:57) I find it like a way not to worry about stuff, so if I’m just really worried about the stuff I just make a list of that stuff down, I’d rather just work on it than worry. (10:22-10:51) In Amsterdam, I’m kinda got pulled into an organization that was organizing events and in the first year you just don’t know what you’re doing, to everybody I kinda talk who’s doing event, everybody says “I have no idea what I’m doing. Because she just don’t know and after 2 or 3 years she kinda sees should have pattern and that’s why I learned. I also knew when I did the last event in Amsterdam I knew next start would be running my own event I just really paid good attention.  What advice can you give to female entrepreneurs?Failure doesn't mean that you're not good enough, keep trying and trying to achieve success. No matter how long it is but never stop doing what can make you happy. (11:13-11:35) Just start, don’t be afraid that you’re not able to do it. Because everybody just started zero and the thing is also most of the time the first stuff you do won’t be the good but that’s fun.
