Self-regulation strategies for kids are essential for overall school success. We need to teach our students how to manage their emotions and behaviors when they become upset and frustrated. As stated earlier, teaching students how to take a break is a great self-regulation strategy. There are several steps that go into teaching students to take a break in your classroom successfully. In this episode you will learn the steps you need to take to prep prior to teaching students how to take a break in your classroom. I walk you through these prep steps that will lead you to being successful when teaching students to take a break in your classroom. These steps include, identifying what students can do while they are on their break, how to ask for a break, and how to return after they have taken a break. Then, I walk you through, step-by-step how to teach students how to take a break in your classroom. I teach you strategies to make sure students understand how to take a break and then return to your classroom without a disruption. Lastly, I walk you through the steps needed to make sure our students are taking a break in your classroom when they need it. We need to help our students make that connection between feeling upset, taking a break, and feeling better. Once our students make that connection, they will likely use taking a break in the future so they can calm their bodies as opposed to engaging in an undesired behavior in our classrooms.
