Novak Djokovic could not have wished for a worse consequence of Daniil Medvedev’s first-ever clay-court title in Rome as the Serb was drawn into the same half of the French Open as Carlos Alcaraz.
Medvedev overtook Djokovic as the world No 2 last week, relegating him to No 3 seed.
As such, there was a 50:50 chance that he would end up in the same half as world No 1 Alcaraz and so it proved, meaning he could face the US Open champion in the semi-finals, then perhaps have to take on Medvedev in the final two days later.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek could have four consecutive grand slam finalists as she tries to defend her French Open title.
Thursday’s draw saw her handed a relatively straightforward opening week, but a succession of players with past success at Roland Garros and beyond are slated to await her in the second week.
