A new vaccine in the fight against malaria

In 2022, WHO’s African Region saw 233 million cases of malaria, with 580,000 deaths. 80% of those deaths are children under 5. The phase 3 trial of the new R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine was published in The Lancet this month, and the results suggest a turning point in the fight against malaria.
