Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, and of chastity and childbirth. She was identified by the Romans with Diana. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She was a skilled archer and a fierce protector of her forest domain. Artemis was one of the most popular goddesses in Greek mythology. She was often depicted as a beautiful young woman with a bow and arrow, accompanied by a pack of hunting dogs.
