The Kalighat Kali temple is about two hundred years old in its present form, although it is mentioned in Manasar Bhasan written in the fifteenth century and by the poet Kankan Chandi in the seventeenth and fifteenth century. The present structure of the temple was completed in 1809 under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family. Santosh Roy Chowdhury, himself a Kali devotee, started the construction of the present temple in 1798. The construction took eleven years to complete. The factual authenticity of Roy Chowdhury being the traditional patron of the deity is disputed. Pilgrims visiting this site practice a sacred dip ritual called Snan Yatra in the Kundupukur tank of the temple:
