Bhimashankar Temple (also known as Bhimashankar or Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga) is a Shiva temple located in Bhimashankar village of the same name in Pune district of Maharashtra. It is a major pilgrimage site and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in the world. The Shivalinga of the temple is one of the three Jyotirlingas of Maharashtra. This temple is situated on a mountain. It is one hundred and ten kilometers away from Pune. There are rare plant and animal species around the temple. This temple is situated in Khed taluka in Bhimashankar forest area. Bhima river originates from Bhimashankar village, and near it are present the hills of Manmad village, on these hills there are old rocks of Lord Bhimashankar, Bhootings and Amba-Ambika:

History:

According to Namdev, a saint of the medieval era, Saint Dnyaneshwar went to Trimbakeshwar and then to Bhimashankar. Namdev himself has also visited this place. The Bhimashankaram temple and the Bhimarathi river are also discussed in thirteenth-century writings; However, the present construction of the temple appears to be completely new. The temple is built in Nagaraara style, which is a blend of traditional and modern designs. The temple hall was built by Phadnavis, the Peshwa's maternal grandfather, during the thirteenth century. The gopura-shikhar of the temple was built by Nana Fadnavis. Kharosi village was given to the temple by King Shivaji. The daily religious ritual was funded through financial resources obtained from the people of the area. He offered one here at Bhimashankar and the rest at Menavali, near Wai, in front of a Shiva temple on the banks of the Krishna river, the Banashankar temple at Pune, the Omkareshwar temple at Pune and the Ramalinga temple at Pune (Shirur). Chimaji Appa (brother of Bajirao I) donated a large bell to the temple, which is visible in front of the temple. It is one of the many Portuguese colonial church bells which the Chimaji-Maratha Empire forces brought from Vasai as souvenirs after defeating the Portuguese in the Battle of Baqaim on sixteen to seventeen February 1749. This type of bell is also present in Khandoba Temple and Naro Shankar Temple in Nashik:
