8 Legs and Spreading: The Expansion of Joro Spiders

Joro spiders, an invasive species originally from China and the Koreas, are making their way up the East Coast of the United States. While they are not harmful to humans, their populations can be annoying and difficult to control. The spiders use a technique called ballooning to disperse, where they release strands of silk that are carried away by the wind. The range of Joro spiders is expanding, and they are now found in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina. They are most noticeable in the fall when the females grow larger and their webs become bigger.
