Synopsis
(a) On the third day of Creation, “It was good” was repeated twice; our Sages tell us that it was “good for Heaven and good for creatures.” The lesson is as follows: A Jew’s job is to connect “Heaven” – matters of the soul and holiness – to the “creatures,” matters of the body and materiality, and turn them into one entity. (b) A lesson from the words of Yehoshua and Calev [in Shelishi of Parashas Shelach], “If Hashem desires us He will bring us to this land... Do not fear the people of the land for they are our bread... and Hashem is with us…”: “Conquering the land” (the reason for which the spies were sent, etc.) in the spiritual sense is the descent of the soul into the body, to transform the physicality of the world (“Eretz Canaan”) into Eretz “Yisrael” – a dwelling place for Hashem.
