Stretching only 80 feet in diameter at the surface, the Blue Hole has beckoned wildlife and travelers as a desert oasis for hundreds of years. When Route 66 was constructed in the 1920s, the Blue Hole and its enticing deep blue, clear, pure waters became a popular tourist attraction for motorists passing through the area. But beyond the allure of the refreshing waters, locked beneath a gate, is an extensive underwater cave system which has claimed several lives.
