UM’s Program is Spiraling

September 21, 2023: Although basketball is a distant second in terms of importance to Michigan fans, there is still a good tradition of winning. However, Juwan Howard and the Wolverines seem to be slowly spiraling the drain. They enter the 2023-24 season after what can only be described as a disappointing season where they not only missed the NCAA tournament but lost in the NIT first round in a heart crushing fashion to Vanderbilt.
The program feels like it is lost with strange roster construction and an inability to recruit to the level hoped for when Howard was hired. The Wolverines have struggled to recruit a point guard they trust going to the portal year after year. 
Worse yet, the team that never could get over the hump last year will enter this season without two first round NBA draft picks (Jett Howard and Coby Bufkin) and the consensus number one transfer portal player, Hunter Dickinson. It's hard to envision that this team is going anywhere in the near future except on a slow circling of the drain. Perhaps they squeeze into the NCAA this year but going forward the future doesn't look rosy.
