#55 “No Mexicans or Dogs Allowed.” The Untold History of US Latinos.

Release Date:

Rick Sanchez welcomes Emmy-nominated filmmaker Carlos Sandoval to discuss his documentary “A Class Apart” which exposes the brutal and shameful treatment of US Latinos during the 1950s.  Sanchez and Sandoval focus on the 1954 case of Hernandez vs Texas which went all the way to the US Supreme Court in which it was ruled that Mexican Americans would now be allowed to participate as jurors, especially in cases that involved other Latinos.  Sandoval explains that in the 50s Latinos were considered white Americans but were treated with the same hatred and racism as the African Americans of that time period.  Segregated bathrooms and eating establishments, insults, hate crimes, and unfair treatment in the workplace.  It’s an ugly part of America’s history that is not in the history books but that everyone should know about.
