Morning Shot: Turbulence-related injuries; can you claim from the airline?

During the recent incident of severe turbulence that hit Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, a number of passengers sustained serious injuries to the brain and spinal cord.
Under an international treaty known as the Montreal Convention, these passengers may be able to claim compensation from the airline over the turbulence-related injuries.
What factors determine the dollar value of this compensation, and do airlines in such situations have any means to limit their liability?
