EP#28 - Marcel Blok of Change Stranamics

Marcel Block is the owner of Change Stranamics consultancy company which concentrates on helping small to medium-sized businesses in the pet industry figure out their strategic path. He served as President of Iams pet foods international from 1988 to 1992. He is a speaker and author.  His articles can be found in the Pet Food Industry publication. 
There are a lot of nuggets of information about the industry as a whole in this episode...here are a few very generalized quotes that take us into a deep and truthful conversation. 
On innovation: "Nothing much has happened in the last 200 years..."
About pet food: "The origin of the pet food industry was to get rid of waste..."  
"There is no regulation that defines human grade as far as I know. So-called feed grade is nutritionally no better or no worse than so-called human grade"
About pet industry marketing:  "Claims made for pet food, or anti-claims were related to instilling fear..."  
" What can we claim & how can we claim it without too much proof and still make it palatable"
About manufacturers: "we won't forget our independents. Those are the people that helped us in the past, now we are going to help them..." for sure. 
Independent retailers: "As soon as the independents fulfill all of these requirements, needs and wants they stop being independent..."
