Welcome to Vermillion, Nebraska! Vermillion is located in southwest Nebraska about 20 miles north of Kansas. The town originally began as a trading post in the early 1860s. The town grew quickly after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in the area in the late 1860s and was incorporated in 1870. Vermillion is located near Harlan County Lake, a reservoir created when the Republican River was dammed to reduce local flooding. The lake provides opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy recreational activities including fishing, boating, hiking, and camping.
