Kilgore, TX - We Get a Slice of Cherry Pie in the Crawlspace

Release Date:

Welcome to Kilgore, Texas, "The City of Stars!"  Kilgore is located in east Texas and is about 70 miles west of Shreveport, LA.  The town was founded in 1872 when the International-Great Northern Railroad constructed a rail line between Palestine and Longview and purchased a parcel of land to establish a new train station and town.  Kilgore thrived as a farming community until the Great Depression.  The discovery of the East Texas Oil Field turned Kilgore into a boomtown in the early 1930s.  At the height of the boom, Kilgore had more then 1,100 oil producing wells within it's city limits.  In one acre in the middle of downtown dubbed the "World's Richest Acre," there were 24 wells operating simultaneously.  The site is now a public park with 13 oil derricks, a historical marker, and a concrete stage for outdoor performances.  We hope you enjoy our trip to this unique little town!Small Town News--whose headline is it, anyway? @SmallTownNewsImprov
