#492 The Impact of Soil Temperature on Seed Germination and Plant Growth: A Veg Grower’s Guide
Welcome to episode 493 of our veg grower podcast! In this week's episode, we discussed the latest updates from our garden and allotment, as well as the effects of soil temperature on plant growth and germination.
Garden update
This week we saw the return of some cold temperature and even snow in some parts of the country. Gardening has been a little restricted, however garden cloches have been put up and a new garden built. This lead to the sowing of pea and carrot seeds after checking the soil temperature
Soil temperature and the effect on germination
We started off by exploring the science behind seed germination and the importance of soil temperature for successful plant growth. We then delved into our own experiences with seed germination and planting, including the effects of using or not using heated propagators.
With the soil temperature appearing to be 10c or above Richard felt it was time to sow a few seeds to see how they get on. Find out if they are successful in future podcast
Allotment update
Next, we gave an update on our allotment progress, sharing some tips for greenhouse maintenance and tidying up neglected areas.
And finally
Finally, we wrapped up the episode with a delicious Swiss chard recipe and a shoutout to our Alternative Veg Grower Show.
