Release Date:

Welcome to The Coffee with Karen podcast, where every week Karen Roberts discusses everything from holistic health to current affairs from a mental, physical, and spiritual perspective. In this episode, Karen welcomes the lovely Amrita Rose, a writer, life and career coach, and wisdom worker. They delve into how to reconnect with your heart and reclaim yourself, a topic that's essential for anyone seeking growth and personal development.

Amrita has navigated through three major career changes in her life and recently published her first book, "No Plaid Suits: How Not to Have a Boring, Normal Life," which has garnered five-star reviews. Amrita's community-based programs of yoga, meditation, integrated art practices, and positive psychology have received enthusiastic appreciation.

Amrita shares with Karen how she wanted to make the world a better place and to bring all the information she shared with clients and in her blog out to a broader group of people. The result was her book, a series of short essays that cover everything from how to cook a meal to how to let go of any relationship, romantic or professional. The book is a mix of wisdom and enthusiasm that reflects resilience, confidence, and coming home to oneself.

The conversation between Karen and Amrita revolves around the theme of embracing change to achieve personal growth. They discuss the reasons why people tend to resist change and the various ways one can overcome that resistance. The podcast is engaging and insightful, providing listeners with practical tips on how to make changes in their lives that are aligned with their hearts.

Amrita  points out that people often resist change because of a biological imperative to survive. The primitive part of the brain, the reptilian brain, is responsible for keeping us safe and surviving. As a result, this part of the brain prefers to stick with what we already know, whether it is wonderful or horrible. This is where resistance comes from. She stresses that anything new feels really prickly and uncomfortable in the beginning, and one has to train all the parts of the body that this new thing will not kill them.

The conversation goes on to describe the three levels of alignment and resonance that one can come into. The first is the brain, which resonates on energy. Everything is made of energy, and the brain processes information very quickly. The emotions are triggered by the thoughts in the brain, and they process a little bit slower. The emotional system is chemical and electrical, and it asks, "how do I feel about that?" The body, which is literally mass, takes the longest time to process change. The physical body takes time to adjust to new routines and needs patience in the process.

Karen and Amrita emphasize that one needs to question one's beliefs about change and be willing to think about what would serve them. For example, someone who wants to quit their job but is afraid of losing their house should question their assumptions. Perhaps they don't need the house they have right now, or they could move to a different location. There are many ways to make changes that are aligned with one's heart, and the podcast encourages listeners to explore those possibilities.
The conversation between Karen and Amrita is an excellent resource for anyone looking to embrace change and achieve personal growth. Listeners will gain a better understanding of why they resist change and how they can overcome that resistance. They will also learn about the three levels of alignment and resonance and how to work with them to make lasting changes. Overall, this podcast is a must-listen for anyone seeking to make meaningful changes in their lives.
In addition to discussing personal growth, Karen and Amrita delve into the societal pressures that impact our self-worth. They explore the impact of Western culture's devaluation of elders and the effects of consumerism and the patriarchy on our self-esteem. Karen and Amrita emphasize the importance of reconnecting with ourselves to feel whole and complete.
