Truck Tech EP71 X15N natural gas engine delivers diesel-like performance

Release Date:

For this episode of Making the switch, we visited the Cummins Jamestown, New York engine plant where the X15N natural gas engine is built. Plant manager Shawn Hricko talks about the diesel-like performance of the industry’s first 15-liter natural gas engine which is lighter than the current 12-liter and features up to 10% better fuel economy.
Industry analysts estimate that renewable natural gas (RNG) could grow to power one in five heavy-duty trucks in the U.S. over the next decade. UPS, Frito-Lay, Wegmans and other fleets count on RNG to reduce emissions and cut fuel costs. With looming regulations that dramatically restrict nitrogen oxide emissions, trucking fleet managers and executives need to understand the role RNG can play in meeting the new rules.
To help unpack the RNG story and assist fleets in making informed decisions about switching from diesel to RNG, we talked with stakeholders throughout the natural gas ecosystem. Following this episode on Cummins, future episodes will feature Kenworth, Hexagon Agility, Clean Energy, Opal Fuels and Paper Transport covering the business case, viability and advantages of RNG for heavy-duty trucks.
