"My 14-year-old daughter is going through her first breakup. Her boyfriend gave her a 14 karat gold necklace with a charm on it. His mother called and asked for it back. My daughter was crushed by the call. I told the mother that we have no plans to give it back because it was a gift. She said her son spent his hard-earned money on it and wants to return it. She said it would be the same thing if he had given her an engagement ring and they broke off the engagement. I disagree. What it would be like is giving someone a birthday gift and then asking for it back because of a disagreement or end of a friendship.
