S2E6: Gestures and Postures

Release Date:

Welcome to this week’s episode of The AUSA Podcast! This week we continue our conversation about culture making with Matthew McCall, talking about Gestures and Postures—or, in more accessible language, Actions and Attitudes. Think of a posture as your heart and mind's attitude toward something, the way you're positioned; think of a gesture as an overflowing of that attitude into your everyday actions. In other words, your attitude and your actions. We begin by breaking down the reasons behind why the cultural postures of condemning, critiquing, copying, or consuming culture aren't enough for creating change, and we look at the different gestures that flow from them. We chat a bit about the book of James and look at the relationship between the heart and the hands. Gestures can be good indicators of an unhealthy (or healthy) posture, and a lack of action might be symptomatic of some deeper problems—especially for the Christian who isn't doing his Faith.
We end by talking about how a new posture changes your gestures, but the way to change posture is to alter your gestures. In other words, the best way to change your attitude so that you can actually engage with culture in a healthy way and create new things is to actually do things. If you want to incite any lasting change, you need to use creativity—you need to actually create new culture.
