“A continuous growing pain is that you're always evolving your approach. I mean, as you gain yours and age and gain years and experience, you constantly have a new perspective on how to properly manage the process”

-Yossi Woodworx

Welcome to a brand-new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Yossi and Jesse from Yossi Woodworx. Their focus at Yossi Woodworks is on high-end specialty work. They run a substantial operation with 35 to 40 workers, emphasizing custom projects such as kitchens, closets, libraries, tables, and various millwork. They work with an array of materials, including wood, metal, glass, laminates, and more. Our specialty lies in building close relationships with designers and clients, ensuring our projects are not just functional but also aesthetically remarkable.

By the age of nine, I was already delving into millwork, fixing bikes, and crafting furniture. At 15, I left school and worked at a furniture shop until I was 17. That's when I ventured into Yossi Woodworks, starting small and gradually expanding. The initial years were a mix of passion, challenges, and learning how to transform my craft into a thriving business.

Listen now and get the whole story!

“The thing is, we have a very big commercial side of ourselves. But I would say I would like that I don't even post much, right? Yeah, I have, you know, certain companies that bring me yearly, you know, like 1.5 2 million and just commercial projects. “

Challenges and Growth:

The early years were financially tight, with ups and downs. It was during a period of reflection, prompted by a broken ankle, that I reevaluated my approach. I shifted from being solely passionate about the craft to understanding the business side of millwork. Over time, I transformed the company into a profitable venture, learning from mistakes, investing in research, and focusing on efficient processes.

Jesse joined Yossi Woodworks over three years ago when the team was smaller. Yossi was looking to structure and organize the growing business. My background in managing custom fabrication companies allowed me to contribute to implementing systems, and we adopted Asana for project management. This shift helped streamline operations, reduce stress, and enhance overall efficiency.

Most Profitable Projects:

Yossi, within the diverse realm of millwork, what types of projects have proven to be the most profitable for Yossi Woodworks?

Yossi: I thrive on challenging projects that push boundaries while being financially rewarding. While we engage in commercial projects for quick turnarounds and profit, our focus is increasingly on large, high-end residential projects. These projects not only showcase our craftsmanship but also contribute significantly to our revenue.

CNC Integration and Kitchen Focus:

Yossi, as Yossi Woodworks stands as a significant player in the industry, what are your plans for future growth?

Yossi: Our immediate focus is on transitioning to a workforce where 80% are CNC operators, enhancing efficiency and allowing us to take on more projects. Additionally, we aim to delve deeper into high-end kitchens. By optimizing CNC operations, we can handle increased demand, pursue more clients, and achieve sustainable growth.

Continuous Optimization:

Jesse, how do you approach the continuous optimization of Yossi Woodworks' processes and systems?

Jesse: Optimization is a continuous journey.
