　北の国の王様は、おもしろいことはないか、と思っていられました。毎日毎日、単調な景色に退屈されていたのです。
　ちょうどその時、南の国へ旅してた家来が帰ってきたので、呼んで話を聞きました。
　「南の国の王様は達者でいらせられたか」
　「南の国の王様は、お達者で、毎日楽しく暮らしていられます。南の国の王様は、乞食や宿無しどもを呼んで、不思議な話を集めて、自分でも話に聞いた花や鳥や蛇などを探しに行ったりしてるのです」

　The king of the northern kingdom was wondering if there was anything interesting to do. He was bored with the monotonous scenery day after day.
　Just then, his retainer, who had traveled to the south, returned home, so he called him over and asked him a story.
　The king of the southern kingdom was a good man, wasn't he?
　The king of the southern kingdom is a good man, and he lives happily every day. The king of the southern kingdom calls beggars and homeless people, gathers up strange stories, and even goes looking for flowers, birds, and snakes that he himself has heard about.
