Wade, a ruling that eliminates women’s constitutional right to abortion after almost 50 years. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Justice Samuel A. The NRA's Secret Tapes

The National Rifle Association opened its annual conference on Friday in Houston — across the state from Uvalde, Texas, which was the site of the country's second-deadliest school shooting earlier this week. Back in 1999, a similar scenario played out. A day after the horrific school shooting at Columbine High School, leaders of the NRA gathered to craft their response. Tim Mak of NPR's Investigations team obtained secret recordings of how they developed their message; it would become their standard response for decades of school shootings to come.

Meet The Man Who Helped Build The Court That May Overturn Roe

As soon as Thursday, the Supreme Court could rule on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. A leaked draft opinion in that case showed a majority of justices agreeing to overturn Roe v. Wade, which would end the constitutional right to an abortion. However the court rules, this moment is the culmination of a decades-long effort by conservative activists around the country. One man in particular has played an outsized role in that effort: Leonard Leo, Co-Chairman of the Federalist Society. He's devoted his career to getting conservatives appointed to the country's most powerful courts. We look at how he came to have so much sway.In this episode, you'll hear excerpts from the interview NPR's Deirdre Walsh conducted with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Sex workers, cops and Queensland's history of corruption

Up until the 1980s, Queensland's police force was something else, led by crooked cops who thrived on bribery and extortion.

It was a murky world of gambling, drugs and illegal brothels that started to come crashing down when a small group of sex workers put their lives on the line to expose the racket.

Now, one of them has spoken out for the first time on the latest series of the ABC's Dig podcast, 'Sirens Are Coming'.

Today, its host Matt Condon on an extraordinary period in Queensland, and what it means for the state now as its anti-corruption watchdog faces fresh questions over its integrity.

UN tackling ‘multitude of crises’ in Horn of Africa: UN deputy relief chief

Repeated warnings of the effects of the war in Ukraine on developing countries reached a new pitch on 13 April, when UN humanitarian agencies said that millions of displaced families across eastern Africa will fall deeper into hunger, as food rations dwindle, amid a lack of sufficient funds, meaning more than 70 percent of refugees in need do not receive enough to eat.
And that same day, the Secretary-General, António Guterres, launched a report detailing the disastrous consequences of the Ukraine war for those who rely on grain supplies sourced from the country.
Joyce Msuya, the UN’s deputy emergency relief chief, joined us in our UN News studio and told Conor Lennon that she had noticed back in 2021 that the hunger crisis was growing - well before the Russian invasion began.

Pedro Águeda lleva varias semanas investigando este tema. Repasamos con él los detalles de esta historia de lujo y de hombres de éxito -Luis Medina Abascal y Alberto Luceño- que acaban sentados en el banquillo.

ICYMI: The tech industry experienced a WTF moment over the weekend when a Google engineer said the company’s AI was sentient. Meaning: unlike our exes, it has a soul. We'll break down what’s going on and why this isn’t Google’s first AI controversy…in sixty seconds.

Behind the story: Adele Ferguson on blowing the whistle on the cosmetic surgery industry

Australians spend more than one billion dollars a year on body-altering cosmetic procedures. From Brazilian butt lifts to fat-zapping procedures, breast enhancements and facelifts, the cosmetic surgery industry is huge.

Now, a joint investigation by The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and 60 Minutes has uncovered how the industry leaves patients unprotected, puts profits before safety and the laws that allow doctors with minimal surgical training to call themselves cosmetic surgeons.

Adele Ferguson is the journalist who investigated Australia's cosmetic cowboys and she joins host Nathanael Cooper for today's episode of Please Explain.

The Takeaway

Canada's Residential School System

From the 1870s into the 1990s, the Canadian government and Catholic churches ran a vast network of boarding schools called "Indian residential schools," where Indigenous children were taken and forced to assimilate into white Canadian culture. Countless children suffered sexual, physical and psychological abuse in these institutions, and survivors and their families are wrestling with the repercussions to this day. Connie Walker, the host of the podcast Stolen: Surviving St. Michael’s, speaks with us about her own family's experience with a residential school, which she uncovered while reporting the new second season of the show, and what the U.S. can learn from Canada’s attempted reckoning with this past.

What does the federal budget mean for you? And for Canada's future?

The housing crisis is one of Canadians' biggest concerns, and in last week's federal budget it got some top-line attention. But inflation didn't receive nearly as much attention, and the cost of everything is rising. How will the plans unveiled by the government make your own budget easier or harder to balance? And beyond personal finances, what's in store for the environment, defence and other critical national issues? And did the Liberals deal with the NDP make this budget bigger and better, or buy the government time to plan for the long term?GUEST: Mike Eppel, senior business editor at CityNews

Stephen Moore on Inflation and America's Ailing Economy

Everyday Americans are feeling the wallop on their wallets from unchecked inflation. From gas prices to food prices, the country is experiencing unprecedented levels of economic woes. But who is to blame for this disaster?“I think that there are two co-conspirators in this economic crime. And one is the Biden administration, for spending so much money,” says economist Stephen Moore, a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation. “And then the second would be the Fed for being so late to the game in recognizing that this inflation was real and not transitory, and taking steps to combat it.”Although the government could take steps to address inflation and dodge a recession, Moore says, it’s unlikely that the Biden administration will act properly.“I think, actually, that if you had the right set of policies put in place, we could avert a recession. We could get back on a good path,” Moore explains. “I think what worries me,
