Transcript
Welcome to Easy Stories in English, the podcast that will take your English from OK to Good, and from Good to Great.
I am not Ariel Goodbody. I'm Ariel's friend, John. I'm recording this message for Ariel, because he's unable to speak at the moment.
So here’s what Ariel has to say:
‘Hello, everyone. Some of you may know that I’m autistic. I talked about it earlier this year, when I did the pre-intermediate version of The Little Frog with the Big Mouth.
‘Basically, it means that my brain works a bit differently to most people’s. I am more sensitive to bright lights, loud sounds and strong smells. I don’t talk or act like most people do, so I often mask. Masking is when an autistic person “puts on a mask”, basically pretends to be like everyone else.
‘Because of these things, being autistic can be very tiring. It’s very hard for

My long walk across India for women's freedom | Srishti Bakshi

There are 600 million women in India -- yet they are rarely seen outdoors after sunset because of safety concerns like harassment and catcalls. On a mission to create safer public spaces, women's rights advocate Srishti Bakshi talks about how she embarked on a 2,300-mile walk across the length of India (a distance equivalent to traveling from New York City to Los Angeles), conducting driving workshops to empower women's mobility across the country. "The more women see other women in public spaces, the more safe, independent and empowered each of us will be," Bakshi says.

Yuuka |

Mixed Signals: audio and wearable data analysis for health diagnostics Wearable and mobile devices are very good proxies for human behaviour. Yet, making the inference from the raw sensor data to individuals’ behaviour remains difficult. The list of challenges is very long: from collecting the right data and using the right sensor, respecting resource constraints, identifying the right analysis techniques, labelling the data, limiting privacy invasion, to dealing with heterogeneous data sources and adapting to changes in behaviour.

Buddhist Economics - Audio

The Open University

In the world of economics, does a person’s well-being really matter? What is more important, social objectives or profit maximisation – or are they even compatible? During a trip to Burma in 1955, Ernest Schumacher pioneered the concept of Buddhist Economics, a set of principles based on the belief that the function of business is to supply goods and services for need and true well-being. Schumacher argued that Buddhist Economics could serve as a vehicle for human development to overcome self centeredness and augment human creativity and knowledge. Presented by Dr Mike Lucas from The Open University Business School and Alan Shipman from the Department of Economics at The Open University.

The World Food System

A. Haroon Akram-Lodhi

Food is central to our identity. It helps us to define who we are, and our place in our home, our community and our world. It shapes the social interactions in which we engage, with our friends, with our families, and with our community. In so doing, food connects us, to ourselves and to each other. But contemporary access to food presents some of the most stark examples of human inequality that we witness on a regular basis. All of us need food to survive, day in and day out. Most of us want more from our food than just survival: we seek pleasure in taste, texture, smell and sight. We seek pleasure in sharing food with others. When we walk into a supermarket, we are confronted with a cornucopia of choice from around the world that enables us to seek this pleasure. Most of us have no idea where the food in the supermarket comes from, and most of us give this no thought, focusing merely upon what we need to acquire to seek the pleasure that we want to get from the food that we buy to eat. We know, of course, that many of us cannot afford to seek that pleasure from food and its sharing, and have to settle for surviving. We know that far too many in our communities cannot afford to make the choices that we can in a supermarket, having to rely upon the charity of food banks to survive. Indeed, many of us face profound difficulties in doing even that. We know that we live in a world in which unparalleled hunger can be found, in places both far and near, as too many simply don't get enough food. The world food system is designed to enable you to understand how our food system, with its unparalleled abundance and immense scarcity, came to be, unpacking the key factors shaping contemporary production, distribution, access to and consumption of food, both here and elsewhere. After all, if we want the world to become a better place it seems that a good place to start would be on our plates.

“Latin Lessons: How South America Stopped Listening to the U.S. and Started Prospering”

Thanks to demand from big emerging economies, most South American governments have become increasingly “resource nationalistic” and have ramped up social spending to meet the needs of the poor and the indigenous, causing poverty levels to drop – at the same time as poverty has been on the increase in the United States.

Will the U.S. continue losing influence in Latin America? Will China soon dominate the area both commercially and strategically? Can the U.S. do business with countries from Mexico to Argentina without interfering in their internal affairs? Journalist Hal Weitzman provides an in-depth analysis of these questions in Latin Lessons: How South America Stopped Listening to the United States and Started Prospering.

Wire Taps 227— History major, Marine, seeking pivot to investment banking. Health care candidate, targeting 750 on the GMAT. Kellogg versus Yale, is it a no-brainer?

This week's episode of WireTaps kicks off with a discussion of the 2023 US News & World Report rankings for US-based MBA programs. For those of you who missed the results, Chicago / Booth shares the top spot with UPenn / Wharton, with Stanford and Kellogg tied for third, and Harvard and MIT Sloan tied for fifth. While advocating for more of a tiered ranking, Alex makes the case that rankings like US News do themselves harm when they place Harvard and Stanford outside the top two. After that discussion, Graham highlighted Real Humans Alumni pieces from a CMU / Tepper grad working at Bank of America, a Duke / Fuqua graduate working at BCG, and USC / Marshall graduate employed by Disney Resorts; each pivoting their careers. Graham also mentioned a new line of business; we have merchandise for sale! All for a b

Understanding the Weaponization of Social Media with P.W. Singer

Information and disinformation campaigns are centuries old, but our social media era has given new and rapid thrust to the sharing of ideas, both for good and ill intent. Meg Steenburgh and Peter W. Singer discuss his book, LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media, which analyzes the poisonous effects of disinformation on politics, war, and social issues worldwide. They look at the role of governments, laws, and individuals; and our collective responsibility to support digital literacy and engage in positive digital citizenship.

The Scriptures Are Real

Kerry Muhlestein

The Scriptures Are Real (TSAR) with Kerry Muhlestein is a podcast where we look at elements of the scriptures that have become real to us. We interview both experts (people with language, archaeological, historical backgrounds, etc.), and lay folks, and explore times when the scriptures became real to them. This is done from the viewpoint of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We believe that there is real power in the scriptures and that as they become more real we can better apply them to our lives and draw more power from them. If you listen to this podcast you will learn all kinds of interesting background information that will help you understand and learn more from the scriptures. We believe it will allow you to add real power to your life. My gratitude to my co-host Lamar Newmeyer. Also to my friend Rich Nicholls, who composed the introductory music.

Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture

Emory College, Emory Center for Mind, Brain and Culture (CMBC)

Lecture | Zoe Donaldson | Neurobiology of Love and Loss: From Genes to Brain and Behavior

Romantic bonds reinforce our health and well-being while their sudden loss is highly detrimental. To identify the neural and genetic mechanisms that contribute to the positive physiological effects of social bonds, my laboratory has taken advantage of the unique behavioral repertoire of monogamous prairie voles. Unlike laboratory rats and mice, prairie voles form life-long pair bonds and exhibit distress upon partner separation. In this seminar, I will focus on recent work delineating transcriptional signatures of pair bonding and partner loss as an example of how we have leveraged our research on bond formation to understand the neural processes that enable recovery from loss. Ultimately, I anticipate that this work will lead to novel ways in which we can harness the positive biological effects of social bonds and ameliorate the emotional pain and harmful health consequences of loss.

9 Ideas For Ending The School Year Well

Years ago when I discussed strategy with a Disney Cruise leader, they told me that people tend to remember how an experience starts and how it ends. Therefore, they designed events with intentionality, particularly on the first day and the last night. #251 Discovering Concept Based Instruction with Kass Haut (pt.1)

Hello everyone! Many teachers are always on the lookout for new ways of doing things. We want new ways to engage students in our content, new ways to plan, and new ways to assess. We want something that will take our class to the next level.

If this is you, then concept based instruction just might be what you need to fire up your class work assessment, and planning!

Kass Haut, otherwise known as @heymisshaut on Instagram and TikTok, is here to tell us about how she discovered concept based instruction, what it is, and how it has changed her teaching.

Personally... I'm excited to hear and learn more already!

Enjoy!

Teaching our children to think and reason mathematically is a challenge, not because students can’t learn to think mathematically, but because we must change our own often deeply-rooted teaching habits. This is where inst

AI Literacy for All with Prof. Cynthia Breazeal

When humans interact, they don’t just pass information from one to the other; there’s always some relational element, with the participants responding to each other’s emotional cues. Professor Cynthia Breazeal, MIT’s new Dean of Digital Learning, believes it’s possible to design this element into human-computer interactions as well. She foresees a day when AI won’t merely perform practical tasks for us, but also will provide us with companionship, emotional comfort, and even mental health support. But a future of closer human-AI collaborative relationships doesn’t only require technological development—it also requires us to learn what AI is capable of and how to interact with it in a more informed way. To further this goal, Professor Breazeal leads the Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education (RAISE) initiative at MIT, which runs an annual “Day of AI” program to promote better understanding of AI in the next generat

Classroom Management

Classroom management is a key component of great teaching. Great teachers manage the classroom to maximise opportunity to learn, and no model of great teaching could be complete without classroom management. Managing the behaviour and activities of a class of students is a huge part of what teachers do.

Classroom management and culture is multifaceted. In this episode of the Evidence Based Education podcast, we explore just a few factors and ideas that can help teachers consider and manage behaviour in their classroom.

In this episode:

Professor Rob Coe talks about the importance of classroom management for ‘maximising opportunity to learn’ – Dimension 3 of the Model for Great Teaching
Dr Alicia Chodkiewicz suggests we move away from framing behaviour as good or bad

David Didau reflects on social norms as an influencer of behaviour

Project management - for iBooks

The Open University

This unit is based upon a case study scenario – it simulates the experience of moving around an organisation, talking to people, and looking at organisational documents. Many managers find that they are required to manage projects. In this unit we aim to help you work through a series of tasks associated with a project set in a realistic context and give you experience of grappling with the issues that arise in managing a project. The unit takes a problem-based learning approach and you work through a series of tasks drawing on case study materials and project management resources that describe approaches that have proven effective in managing projects. This study unit is just one of many that can be found on LearningSpace, part of OpenLearn, a collection of open educational resources from The Open University. Published in ePub 2.0.1 format, some feature such as audio, video and linked PDF are not supported by all ePub readers.

One Secret Parents Can Use to Send the Best Versions of Their Kids to School

When a family eats together, it demonstrates that family is the highest priority. While most agree with this, we often neglect it because we’ve jumped onto a hamster wheel, running to practices, rehearsals, games, recitals, and competitions. Rushing about together is not the same as pausing, eating, and interacting. We must avoid noise and clutter. In this episode, Tim and Andrew discuss the importance of sharing a meal together on our overall well-being.
