#312: Tales as Old as Time, Pt. 1 — Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Mamoru Hosada’s new anime BELLE is the latest take on a certain tale as old as time, one that was previously enshrined in the animated feature canon with 1991’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, one of the touchstones of Disney’s storied late-20th-century renaissance. This week we crack open the clamshell VHS case on Disney’s version, in particular its labored-even-by-Disney-standards development process, its unforgettable Ashman/Menken music, what made it stand out in the animation landscape back then, and how those same elements look compared to the film’s modern-day successors.
Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about either version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, BELLE, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.

The Last Movie Ever Made: The Don't Look Up podcast

Netflix, Hyperobject Industries, Pineapple Street Studios

In early 2020, Adam McKay set out to make a comedy. This is what happened when a cast and crew came together to make a disaster comedy, while living through a series of very uncomedic disasters. Featuring: Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Tyler Perry, Ariana Grande, Timothee Chalamet, Rob Morgan, Himesh Patel, and many, many more.

WTF Happened To....?!

JoBlo.com

Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions and actors/actresses that were "hot" one minute and gone the next. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, many films had such behind the scenes issues that we will discuss in our shows. We'll also delve into the lives of some Hollywood folk who seemed to have disappeared after striking it big at first. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To....?!

Film Stories with Simon Brew

Simon Brew

Magnolia (1999) and Police Academy (1984)

In the new episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, an Oscar-nominated one-off, and a hit comedy that was anything but a one-off. After Boogie Nights, writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson had a moment where he could make what he wanted, and get total creative control. It helped that he got Tom Cruise involved in Magnolia too. Police Academy was the film that launched regular templated sequels - but there was a genuine fear that the original film wasn't going to be lowbrow enough to succeed. Stories of both are told in this episode. Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriespod. Support our work at www.patreon.com/simonbrew.

Introducing: Operator

During the 1-900 number craze of the Nineties, one company provided the vast majority of phone sex. American Telnet was an empire founded by the man who called himself “The Telephone Pimp.” He ran the company “like General Motors” and got filthy rich doing it. But for the (mostly) women who answered the calls and delivered fantasies 24-7, it was a different story. The powerful stigma against sex work was always lurking just beneath the surface, until it threatened to tear apart the whole company. Hosted by Tina Horn (Why Are People Into That?), OPERATOR is an eight-part series about big ambitions, Shakespearean-level corporate backstabbing, men and women at the cutting edge of a technological revolution...and on the front lines of a sexual one.Listen to Operator at http://wondery.fm/OP_Inside_SeriesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Monster Island Film Vault

Moonlighting Ninjas Media

A podcast seeking entertainment and enlightenment through tokusatsu. Origin Story: After vacationing on the Monsterland Resort, professional writer/raging nerd Nathan Marchand got a job as the curator of the Vault containing the films about Monster Island’s many kaiju residents. Now he and his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA (who miraculously survived the infamous War in Space), record a bi-weekly podcast critically and academically examining each of the films in the prestigious Vault with one to four guest hosts chosen from Monster Island’s many tourists. Philosophy: Kaiju and/or tokusatsu fans will tell you these genres are undeniably fun. What’s often missed, though, are the deeper meanings below the sensational surface. Meanings entrenched in the story’s original historical and cultural context. That’s why this podcast believes in film appreciation. What’s that? It’s studying a movie’s script, direction, cinematography, and other aspects of filmmaking. It’s learning how and why it was created since movies aren’t made in a vacuum. This is especially true with foreign films. Non-native audiences are separated by both time and culture with them. There are things that will go over their heads that the original audience intrinsically understood. Listening to this podcast, listeners will gain a greater appreciation of the films and the respective cultures in which they were made. Format: The podcast alternates between full-length film discussions with one to four guest hosts and “mini-sodes.” Full episodes are divided into three segments: The Entertaining Info Dump (plot and production details), Kaiju Conversations (discussion with one to four guest hosts chosen from Monster Island’s Tourists), and Toku Topics (deeper analyses of issues brought up by the films). “Mini-sodes” include audio essays, comedy sketches, and interviews. Expect surprises!

ECFS Productions

An ECFS Productions Original Podcast: Cinema Spectator is a film history podcast that takes away the pretense that usually comes along with learning about film. True Romance

Waffle On about True Romance.

Hello and welcome to this edition of Waffle On in which Meds and Kell chat away about this brilliant and often over looked 1993 film, True Romance. In the lads opinion this is the perfect love story. Forget your love actually and Hallmark channel movies get this Quentin Tarantino script and Tony Scott vision down your heart valves.

Please do join our Facebook group if you can, if not share our podcast with those you like, or even dislike.

Merry Christmas to you all.
