Special Episode: Roe v. Wade Is Overturned

This episode contains strong language. The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a ruling that eliminates women’s constitutional right to abortion after almost 50 years. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Justice Samuel A. Witnesses: Trump knew plan to overturn election was illegal

The third January 6 public hearing focuses on Trump's campaign, with the help of lawyer John Eastman, to relentlessly pressure Mike Pence into overturning the 2020 election. Witnesses testify that Trump knew the plan was illegal but tried to have it carried out anyway and an email reveals Eastman sought a presidential pardon a few days after the insurrection. Will there be any criminal referrals and if so, who is the most likely candidate? Two former attorney generals join CNN Tonight to discuss.

Also at the hearing: Trump slammed Pence as a "wimp," during a heated call just before the Capitol insurrection, a video shows testimony of rioters saying they invaded the Capitol at Trump’s direction, and the Committee presents new photographs of Pence hiding from the mob as the violence escalated and they put up gallows while calling for his head.

Checks and Balance: Insurrection retrospection

After conducting more than 1,000 interviews and reviewing over 140,000 documents, the House of Representatives’ January 6th committee is now presenting its findings. Yet much of what it is investigating happened publicly: the violence in the Capitol was live-streamed and the conspiracy to overturn the election happened in the open. The NRA's Secret Tapes

The National Rifle Association opened its annual conference on Friday in Houston — across the state from Uvalde, Texas, which was the site of the country's second-deadliest school shooting earlier this week. Back in 1999, a similar scenario played out. A day after the horrific school shooting at Columbine High School, leaders of the NRA gathered to craft their response. Tim Mak of NPR's Investigations team obtained secret recordings of how they developed their message; it would become their standard response for decades of school shootings to come.

Kenya's election hustle

Kenyan politicians are spending millions of dollars on campaigns to win lucrative political office in August's crucial elections. With 75 percent of Kenyans under the age of 35, securing the youth vote will be key. But amid a youth unemployment crisis, many have grown disillusioned about the chance for real change. Dickens Olewe travels to Nairobi to meet the young Kenyans who instead see the election campaign as a new business opportunity, a new "hustle" to extract cash from competing candidates. Meet The Man Who Helped Build The Court That May Overturn Roe

As soon as Thursday, the Supreme Court could rule on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. A leaked draft opinion in that case showed a majority of justices agreeing to overturn Roe v. Wade, which would end the constitutional right to an abortion. However the court rules, this moment is the culmination of a decades-long effort by conservative activists around the country. One man in particular has played an outsized role in that effort: Leonard Leo, Co-Chairman of the Federalist Society. He's devoted his career to getting conservatives appointed to the country's most powerful courts. We look at how he came to have so much sway.In this episode, you'll hear excerpts from the interview NPR's Deirdre Walsh conducted with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthi

Japan Times contributor Francesco Basetti joins Deep Dive to discuss the rise and fall of the Japanese ski industry, and how resorts are faring with so few people able to enjoy them.

Sex workers, cops and Queensland's history of corruption

Up until the 1980s, Queensland's police force was something else, led by crooked cops who thrived on bribery and extortion.

It was a murky world of gambling, drugs and illegal brothels that started to come crashing down when a small group of sex workers put their lives on the line to expose the racket.

Now, one of them has spoken out for the first time on the latest series of the ABC's Dig podcast, 'Sirens Are Coming'.

UN tackling ‘multitude of crises’ in Horn of Africa: UN deputy relief chief

Repeated warnings of the effects of the war in Ukraine on developing countries reached a new pitch on 13 April, when UN humanitarian agencies said that millions of displaced families across eastern Africa will fall deeper into hunger, as food rations dwindle, amid a lack of sufficient funds, meaning more than 70 percent of refugees in need do not receive enough to eat.
And that same day, the Secretary-General, António Guterres, launched a report detailing the disastrous consequences of the Ukraine war for those who rely on grain supplies sourced from the country.
Joyce Msuya, the UN’s deputy emergency relief chief, joined us in our UN News studio and told Conor Lennon that she had noticed back in 2021 that the hunger crisis was growing - well before the Russian invasion began.

But one thing seems clear: after years of anxious speculation, the structure of the world’s supply chains have fundamentally changed. On this week’s Money Talks, hosts Soumaya Keynes, Mike Bird and Alice Fulwood go on a journey to find out what’s still leading to delays and investigate the big shifts that will continue long after shelves are finally full. They’re joined by Audrey Ross, import and export compliance manager at Orchard Custom Beauty and Chris Rogers, principal supply chain economist at Flexport, who talk about the factors that are still gumming up delivery of goods. Then, Michael Wax, co-founder of Forto, explains why digitising the industry could help speed up shipping ti

The Economist Asks: Will America finally pass gun-control legislation?

The US Senate has reached a bipartisan gun-reform agreement that, if passed into law, could be the most significant in 30 years. Guest host Jon Fasman speaks to Chris Murphy, the Connecticut senator who led the negotiations for the Democrats, about the significance of the deal and why a compromise has been so elusive in the past. The senator, who has spent ten years trying to enact a change in gun laws, explains why he thinks even modest reforms will make America safer. Please subscribe to The Economist for full access to print, digital and audio editions:www.economist.com/podcastoffer  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dexter Filkins on the Rise of Ron DeSantis

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has shown himself uniquely skilled at attracting attention beyond the borders of his home state.  Just this month, DeSantis blocked state funds for the Tampa Bay Rays stadium after players voiced support for gun control in the wake of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.  He’s also continuing a fight to punish the Disney Corporation for criticizing Florida’s so-called Don’t Say Gay law.  An Ivy League-educated anti-élitist firebrand, he is willing to pick a fight with anyone—reporters, health officials, teachers, Mickey Mouse—to grab a headline. DeSantis “practically radiates ambition,” the staff writer Dexter Filkins tells David Remnick. “He sounds like Trump, except that he speaks in complete sentences. … He’s very good at staking out a position and pounding the table and saying, I’m not giving in to the liberals in the Northeast.” Yet despite having been anointed by Donald Trump in his primary electi

Is Spotify killing the music industry?

Not so long ago the music industry was threatened like it had never been before as online piracy tore into the profit margins of record labels the world over. Often hailed as the saviour, Spotify stepped in and offered audiences a new way of enjoying their favourite artists and without the need to illegally download pirated material. Despite this, musical artists are becoming increasingly vocal about how difficult it is to make a living from streaming, all whilst record labels and Spotify are reporting huge profit margins.

This week, Tanya Beckett takes a closer at how online streaming services are affecting the music industry.

Best- and Worst-Case Outcomes of the Jan. 6 Public Hearings

On Thursday, a bipartisan House select committee will begin public hearings on the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. The weeks ahead will be awash with news as the committee reveals what happened in the days and weeks before the attack — and to what extent the rioters were emboldened, or enabled, by the White House and Republican lawmakers. To wade through the news and help us understand what to pay attention to as the hearings unfold, host Jane Coaston calls upon two experts on the Republican Party.Nicole Hemmer is an author and historian of conservative media. Wall Street seemed set to begin this short trading week with solid gains on the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere.
