Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

The world is now in the midst of the great green transition. Countries are looking for ways to reduce their emissions, and grow their economies in a way that will not harm the environment. But according to the Asian Development Bank, developing economies in Asia are finding it difficult to finance a green, inclusive recovery.

In this episode, The Straits Times’ environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty discuss the sustainability investment gap in Asia, and how to narrow it, with Ms Valerie Kwan, who oversees corporate and investor initiatives at the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC).

Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation: hands-on conservation

Moira Dennis

A honey buzzard on its first migration

The honey buzzard is one of Britain's most enigmatic and elusive birds, poorly named (being neither a buzzard nor an eater of honey) and under-reported.  In August, Roy Dennis and his team, having discovered a honey buzzard nest in woodland in Moray, where Roy lives, fitted a highly sophisticated satellite transmitter to a female chick. A month later, the bird left on migration for Africa, but experienced the most dramatic start to her journey, blown eastwards across the North Sea to Denmark. She survived, and after several days' rest, continued on her journey, correctly turning south towards her destination.Tim Mackrill tells the story of her journey so far, and describes what might yet be waiting for her, while Roy explains more about the species as a whole.Producer: Moira DennisContributors (in order of appearance):  Roy Dennis, Tim MackrillSupport the show (http://www.roydennis.org/support-us/)

The Mushroom Hour Podcast

Mushroom Hour

Ep. 126: The Art in Mushroom Cultivation & Embracing the Unknowable (feat. Sam Shoemaker)

Today on Mushroom Hour we are excited to interview mushroom cultivation artist Sam Shoemaker. Sam is an interdisciplinary artist and mycologist based in Los Angeles, California. Sam's recent artistic work stems from an ongoing collaboration with rare, native, and medicinal fungi. After receiving his MFA from Yale University in 2020, Sam founded the urban mushroom farm Myco Myco from his underground laboratory in Los Angeles. His obsession with mushrooms led Sam to some unconventional cultivation projects. These projects produced interesting results which led him to ask questions about how mushrooms can be used and when nobody seemed to be able to answer his questions he just kept going - doing more experiments, taking the science as far as he could, and trying things for himself. Approaching mycology through the lens of an artist, Sam explores the tremendous amount of creative

The Jane Goodall Act will revolutionize animal welfare in institutions by revealing how accredited zoos, like the Toronto Zoo, prioritize animal welfare and conservation of their animals compared to roadside zoos and private owners of exotic animals such as big cats (tigers, lions, etc.), primates, and other animals that require trained zookeepers, veterinarians, and researchers that can care for the animals properly.    I am joined by Dolf DeJong (CEO of the Toronto Zoo), Grant Furniss (CEO of the Assiniboine Park & Zoo), Dr. Clement Lanthier (CEO of the Calgary Zoo), and Marty McKendry (Senior Advisor to Senator Klyne) to discuss why the Jane Goodall Act is important for animal welfare and conservation.   Link to the Jane Goodall Act: https://janegoodall.ca/take-action/the-jane-goodall-act/

Today, we explore why seahorses are important, what factors have driven steep population declines in several seahorse species, and where we go from here. Grab your sunscreen and a coconut because we're going back to the islands! This week we bring on researcher, explorer, and author Heather Arnold to discuss here book "The Islands of the Giants: The Lost Race of Giants of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao". About to be a full time resident on the islands, Heather discusses the anomalies and her findings on the true history of these three islands in the Caribbean. What evidence has she found that there indeed were giants on these islands? This episode gets blurry with everything lights and UFO sightings to stories of large people being found and the historical evidence suddenly disappears.

Episode 279: Keen on Kākāpō

The critically endangered Kākāpō is one of the more endearing species we have covered to date. This flightless parrot is native to Aotearoa New Zealand and was nearly extinct in the late 20th century. It is only through the commitment of the New Zealand Government and her people that the Kākāpō is still in existence. Today there are over 200 of these birds that are being cared for and guarded off Aotearoa New Zealand's coasts. This is just an amazing bird that surprised us at every turn. They truly deserves your love and another species you cant miss.

#17 Shark talk

Renowned shark expert Clinton Duffy shares niche knowledge and on-the-job stories. Sharks have a little bit of a PR problem. They’re fascinating, intelligent creatures, and most of them mind their own business. But they are predators, and their reputation has become a bit mythical. In this episode, we break it down.

We talk about how we monitor shark species in an area as complex and vast as the ocean, their reproduction methods which are so incredible it could have come from a sci-fi writer’s brain, and a shark species that walks on land. Not once have we told a lie.

Clinton Duffy is a Technical Advisor, Marine Species, and he works at the Department of Conservation in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The case for conservation podcast

www.case4conservation.com

The case for conserving the biodiversity of life on Earth needs to be credible and robust. Sometimes that requires a willingness to question conventional wisdom. The case for conservation podcast features long-form conversations with conservation thinkers, in which we try to untangle issues into which they have some insight.

FE4.5 - Model Citizens: Bearly Legal (Part 2)

The North American Model is just one story of how wildlife conservation can be practiced. In part 2 of this mini-series we tell another: of restorative human–predator relationships and local self-determination.
We're bringing you a success story from the Great Bear Rainforest, and another articulation of how we can relate to wildlife — complete with its own set of guiding principles, naturally.

TTBOOK Presents: Kinship

To The Best Of Our Knowledge

Shapeshifting

There are old folktales and legends of people who can become animals. Animals who can become people. And there’s a lesson for our own time in those shapeshifting stories — a recognition that the membrane between what's human and more-than-human is razor thin.

Human identity cannot be separated from our nonhuman kin. From forest ecology to the human microbiome, emerging research suggests that being human is a complicated journey made possible only by the good graces of our many companions. In partnership with the Center for Humans and Nature and with support from the Kalliopeia Foundation, To The Best Of Our Knowledge is exploring this theme of "kinship" in a special radio series.

Oceans Week: How you should approach it

There seems to be a day for everything these days and the oceans have a day as well, June 8th. It's a time for us to think about why we love the ocean so much and how we can better protect. There are celebrations, conferences, announcements (big and small) where governments and organizations try to stand out from one another to tell you how they are committed to protect the oceans. But the announcements are all massive agreements and commitments that don't include a very important thing, YOU!   In this episode, I am going to go over my thoughts about oceans week and how I think you should approach it. What you can get out of oceans week.   I am also going to discuss the programming that I have planned for Oceans Week for this podcast and some other things.

S2 E20: Tomatoes That Leave Earth Behind

At an improbable greenhouse in the Utah desert, yummy tomatoes grow without soil and produce for nearly an entire year. The greenhouse gets heat and CO2 from a natural-gas power plant to which it is linked by a sort of umbilical cord. 7 Ways to Become a Better Biologist on Your Own

In mid 2020 when COVID shut so many things down ( virtually everything), a lot of people lost their volunteer positions, internships, or seasonal positions, and they felt that it really set them back in their career in terms of getting experience. How can we predict extreme weather events, and measure the impact they have on life on this planet? Hosted by Dragon's Den investor and business expert Deborah Meaden, and featuring Dr Cornelia Klein and Steve Trent, this episode combines the science of storm patterns with the very real effects of extreme weather events on communities across the world. And, as the climate crisis develops, how well placed is the UK to deal with extreme weather events as they become increasingly likely? These conversations are the opinions of the contributors and not necessarily the views of NERC.

With PFAS Science, the More We Know, the Worse It Gets

Scientists and environmental regulators have been studying PFAS for years now, but new details are still coming out that make these so-called "forever chemicals" seem even more hazardous than previously thought.

Earlier this month, the EPA said it's unsafe to be exposed to essentially any amount of PFOA and PFOS, the two most well-known PFAS chemicals. The agency set a new non-binding health advisory for these two chemicals at less than one tenth of one part per trillion. The EPA's prior standards set in 2016 were thousands of times higher this and, furthermore, current PFAS sampling technology can only detect concentrations of four parts per trillion and above.

Bloomberg Law chemicals reporter Pat Rizzuto joined our environmental podcast to talk about why the agency took this extraordinary step, where the science on PFAS chemicals is heading, and what this will mean for regulators grappli

Cats of the Wild

Up Close with Tiger Poachers: Allison Skidmore, Leave them Wild

Over 6,000 kilometres from Moscow in the Far East of Russia is the remote and harsh habitat of the Amur Tiger - also known as the Siberian Tiger. It is one of the largest cats in the world, and there is estimated to be around 400 remaining in the wild. The largest threat for the Amur tiger is poaching - but there's really only one way to truly understand how and why poachers poach - and that's to talk to the poachers directly.
And so American wildlife criminologist, Allison Skidmore had a proposal for her university - to go and live in these hunting communities in Far East Russia for months at a time to find out first-hand the REAL extent of the threat of poaching for the Amur Tiger.
Is it a crazy story? Absolutely. It's a story that shows true courage and an unrelenting ambition to learn more about this threat so conservation actions can be taken in the future.

Biophilic Solutions: Nature Has the Answers

How Biophilia Makes Our Democracy Stronger with David Orr

This week, we’re diving deep into the intersection of democracy and the environmental movement, why it’s imperative that all lawmakers agree to the rules of the game, and how biophilia might act as a bridge to the equitable, green future we want. We also weigh the merits of a circular economy and discuss what it means to be responsible citizens and stewards for future generations. Our guest is renowned scholar of environmental and political studies at Oberlin College David Orr, author of eight books, including Dangerous Years: Climate Change, the Long Emergency, and the Way Forward (2016) and co-editor of three others including Democracy Unchained: How To Rebuild Government For The People (2019). While at Oberlin, Dr. Orr led the effort to design and build the Adam Joseph Lewis Center, one of the first truly biophilic buildings in the United States. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Lyndhurst Prize,
