How the Met’s Astonishing Surrealism Show Rewrites Global Art History

If, perhaps, someone in a trench coat who was smoking a pipe and had a gigantic eyeball for a head were to approach you a street on a particularly sunny night and ask you what surrealism was, you'd probably answer by throwing out a few names—Salvator Dalí, Man Ray, Frida Kahlo—and you wouldn't be wrong.
But what if that strange interlocutor were to tell you that everything you know about surrealism is in fact, just the tip of a very large iceberg? And that this lastingly popular movement stretched in fact, far beyond Paris, far beyond Europe, to every corner of the globe, and to countless fascinating artists who you've never heard of before? Well that, in a sense, is exactly what an extraordinary and frankly revelatory exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is doing right now.
Titled "Surrealism Beyond Borders," the exhibition, organized by Met curator Stephanie D'Alessandro toget

Artists’ monuments, the €471m Caravaggio villa auction flop, Michael Armitage on Sane Wadu

This week, our contemporary art correspondent Louisa Buck visits the exhibition Testament at Goldsmiths CCA in London, where 47 artists have been invited to make proposals that ponder the idea of tearing down and erecting monuments and what it might mean to rethink them. Louisa talks to Sarah McCrory, the director of Goldsmiths CCA, and to Adham Faramawy, one of the artists in the show. In Rome, a villa with ceiling paintings by Caravaggio and Guercino with a price tag of €471m failed to attract any bids. The Art Newspaper’s founder Anna Somers Cocks, who’s based in Turin, tells us why. And in this episode’s Work of the Week, the artist Michael Armitage tells us about Sane Wadu’s painting Black Moses (1993), a work in Wadu’s retrospective at the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute in Kenya, co-founded by Armitage, which opened last week. Giving and Receiving Feedback

Feedback is the topic of conversation this week on Thriving Women Artists. We all want to know people’s honest opinions and what we can potentially work on improving. Join Ping, Sarah and Dorien as they discuss why feedback is important, how to give it, when to give it, and a little bit of their own experiences.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Feedback can be educated or uneducated, it can be a reaction or it can be thought out. It can cover the whole spectrum of critical to positive. Don’t just think about what they are saying, look at who is saying it and why.

You can also get feedback on the process around your work. If you’re working with clients they may give this, or in some cases give no feedback at all, it happens.

Always remember to ask yourself what is the purpose for you wanting feedback and who are you getting feedback from. Are they the right person who can help you know what

Talk Art HOLIDAYS SPECIAL!!! This very special episode was recorded from Pace Gallery, New York!!! We are proud to collaborate again with BMW to bring you a conversation with iconic artist Jeff Koons. We discuss Jeff's passion for art which he discovered at an early age, we discuss his student years in Chicago and working for Ed Paschke, whose technicolor renderings of superheroes and other pop icons were an early source of inspiration. We learn of Koons’s first job at the Museum of Modern Art, and his first major works that invoked commodity fetishism: titled The New, they comprised vacuum cleaners displayed on or in Plexiglas boxes over grids of fluorescent light. We explore why he chose stainless steel and reflective surfaces within his most celebrated sculptures and how art can truly change lives.Jeff Koons’ latest collaboration with BMW is THE 8 X JEFF KOONS, a hand-painted limited interpretation of a BMW M850i xDrive. Harry Dodge – Season 5, Episode 2

In this episode, artist and writer Harry Dodge reads from My Meteorite, or Without the Random There Can Be No New Thing (Penguin Press, 2020). Perhaps best known as a sculptor, Dodge writes from inside the artist's life and the sometimes inchoate density of a studio practice. Tracking us through cosmic patterns and material grapplings as they intersect with family, work, and grief, this first book gives us a genre-defying memoir that succeeds, as well, as art writing.
Harry Dodge is an American visual artist and writer. He was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2017, and his sculpture, drawing, and video work has been exhibited at many venues nationally and internationally, including JOAN (LA, 2018),  Tufts University Art Gallery (2019), Grand Army Collective (Brookyn, 2017), and the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena (2016). His first book, My Meteorite, was published by Penguin Press in 2020.

Karla Huebner, "Magnetic Woman: Toyen and the Surrealist Erotic" (U Pittsburgh Press, 2020)

Karla Huebner’s Magnetic Woman: Toyen and the Surrealist Erotic (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2020) follows the life and career Czech artist Toyen (Marie Čermínová, 1902-1980). Toyen’s career spans the twentieth century, from the cultural flux of interwar Prague to postwar France. Huebner traces the growth, divergence, and fluidity of Czech as well as international avant-gardes. Eroticism, Huebner argues, centered Toyen’s life, settings, and art. Toyen’s ambiguous gender equally found its own place in the predominantly male Czech Devětsil group, lesbian milieus of interwar Paris, and André Breton’s postwar Surrealist network. So too did Toyen’s work in erotic drawings, book commissions, collage, and oil paintings, all generously represented in this monograph. Magnetic Woman hence unites art history with cultural and intellectual history. Huebner analyzes Toyen’s artistic

Critiquing Comics #209: “Producing the End of the World”

Anthologies have traditionally been something of a bear to critique, especially if they’re not very good. Producing the End of the World has solved that problem — both by sending us a media preview with only four of the collection’s stories in it, and by, well, being very good. Tim and Adam discuss a book … Continue reading Critiquing Comics #209: “Producing the End of the World”

#10: Miranda July + Jon Gray

“In my most core self, I’m a writer and a performer,” says Miranda July. But since coming of age in Portland’s riot-grrrl scene, July has made a name for herself as a true multi-hyphenate: as an artist, singer, screenwriter, author, Hollywood film director and actress, and more. In this episode, she speaks with Marc Spiegler about writing her first play – based on correspondence with a convicted murderer – to releasing her film Kajillionaire in the midst of the pandemic and the flood of DMs that followed. “My entire experience of the release was those messages,” she recalls. Separately, curator Larry Ossei-Mensah talks to Jon Gray, a cofounder of the activist cooking collective Ghetto Gastro, about food as a device for social change and branching out into the world of art.

A brush with... Pablo Bronstein

Pablo Bronstein talks to Ben Luke about the art, literature, music, film and much more that have influenced him and inspire him today, and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Bronstein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1977, but came to the UK as a child and grew up in suburban London. He makes beautifully executed drawings, performances and video works. They reflect on the architecture, design and cultural traditions of mostly pre-20th-century eras and what they tell us about the role of aesthetic taste both when they were made and as we see them today. Pablo’s work is often funny, though with a sardonic edge, but its impact is heightened by the fact that it is also deeply learned—his knowledge of the intricacies, pretensions, quirks and excesses of art, design and architectural history are crucial to the effectiveness and precision of his work. He discusses his early fascination with drawing buildings, his love

Van Gogh Light Shows: A Roundtable

If you live in or have visited a major city over the past year, chances are you've come across some version of the various new "immersive" "Van Gogh" "experiences." Staged by for-profit companies and marketed heavily on Facebook, these "environments" promise to bring audiences closer to the beloved paintings of Vincent Van Gogh through the magic of digital enlargement, animation, and projection.

In this episode, Sarah and Tina are joined by Swagato Chakravorty, a fellow at the Philadelphia Museum of Art whose doctoral work in art history and film and media studies focused on the history of screens. Together, they attempt to get to the bottom of just what makes these experiences so appealing to audiences, and how we might think about them as aspects of visual culture related to ideas in art history, instead of just dismissing them as unsatisfying reproductions outright.

Being out in the world photographing is a lot of fun, but that doesn't always translate to making more art. One of the implications of the gathering assets strategy is that the art making takes place back home, in the studio, in the quiet time we spend developing ideas and processing images into a completed piece of art. If that's what counts, what is the correct ratio between photographing and art-making when it comes to allocating our precious creative time?

Fallout - The War Photography of Peter van Agtmael

Conflict photography of the past twenty years is a subject we have discussed in previous episodes with photographers, psychologists, and scholars, but our very welcomed guest, photographer Peter van Agtmael adds his well-articulated thoughts on the subject, including his own motivations and challenges while covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the ramifications of those wars here in the United States and elsewhere. On this episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we reflect on the mindset of a young man wanting to bear witness to history and the evolution of his thoughts after many assignments and embeds. We also learn about aspects of his work, from the intra-personal to the technical and how these have also changed over the course of an almost two-decade career.   The work of van Agtmael has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, and The New Yorker; he is a Guggenheim Fellow; a winner of multip

The Artist’s Gift - Nicholas Wilton - Ep 12

https://Art2Life.com - One of the many gifts that artists possess is a unique sensitivity to the world around us. We feel…EVERYTHING. If the lighting is off, we know. If the volume is too loud, we know. If a live band's tempo is slightly dragging you can almost guarantee that every musician in the audience is losing their collective mind. But we also feel deeper things. Like when an opportunity is presenting itself or when someone might be dishonest. And while feeling everything so deeply and so constantly may seem like a burden to some, the story of how I learned to embrace this part of myself is one I will never forget. Join me, as I share the story of a chance college encounter that changed my life. This meeting allowed me to recognize that my sensitivity is what enables me to be an artist in the first place. However, my paradigm shift didn’t happen because I met a person. I owe it all to a wild baby crow. ======================

146. Making Art Fun Again + Podcast Changes

I’ve been quiet on social media lately but I have been working on something really important - making art fun again! The studio has had a makeover, new art supplies have been ordered and ALL my sketchbooks are out!! Plus, Richie and I have been having some BIG ol' chats about the future direction of the podcast and art biz in general.
With a new year coming, it’s time for a change. In this week’s episode, we look back on the last year and talk about the changes we are making to bring more creativity and fun into our lives as we head into 2022. This includes a change in the way that we approach the podcast.
As it’s the last episode of the year, we also want to thank you for your support and wish you a happy festive season!

Joy Jones

In March 2020, Joy Jones was rehearsing the part of Vera in the Arena Stage production of August Wilson’s Seven Guitars directed by Tazewell Thompson. It’s not a surprise that Arena Stage would be mounting Seven Guitars. A long-time grantee of the National Endowment for the Arts,  Arena Stage is a pioneer of the Regional Theater Movement and the largest company in the country dedicated to American plays and playwrights. The surprise came with the pandemic that closed theaters and brought the country to a halt or at least a pause.  It took over a year and a half, but Seven Guitars finally opened at Arena Stage in late November 2021 with cast and audience equally jubilant. In this podcast, Joy Jones talks about the role of Vera, playing August Wilson, working with Tazewell Thompson, re-entering the rehearsal room and the stage after the shut down, and learning to love the arts as a kid in Washington DC.

Ep. 43 Paint Pigments with Gamblin (Mini Episode)

We often talk about color on this show…hue, value, saturation… but at the heart of all of that is the pigments themselves. In Mini Episode 43, I sit down with Mary Weisenburger from Gamblin  and we get down to the nuts and bolts of what makes paint paint. And while we look through the lens  of oil paint in particular, so much of what we talk about is true for acrylic, watercolor, and gouache as well. Show notes here:https://www.learntopaintpodcast.com/podcast/episode43Support the show here:https://www.patreon.com/learntopaintpodcastSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/learntopaintpodcast)

Going Big! [150]

This week, we answered a question from listener Paige, who asked about our experiences with scaling up. Paige wrote: "I am struggling to scale up, especially in my chosen media of collage but I see you work both small and large and I wondered if there was a formula for that."

Spoiler alert: neither of us have a formula, but we do share our own challenges, experiences and tips. Our conversation covers the challenges of space (both in buyers' homes and our own studios); the need to use bigger tools; and the importance of mixing up a lot more paint. We also look at the inherent difficulties of scaling up collage work, and offer a few suggestions of how to handle that transition. In the end, making large work is a new challenge for each of us, and requires us to find our own solutions, but we have both found the process rewarding enough to make it worthwhile.

DJI Osmo Action VS GoPro Hero7 Black

DJI recently released its "GoPro killer" - the DJI Osmo Action. I've been using this camera for about a week now - so how does it stack up to the GoPro Hero7 Black? Both do 4k video and 12 megapixel stills. Both have incredible image stabilization (with a slight edge to the Osmo). But what about timelapse, hyperlaps and the other features action cameras are now expected to have? We'll take a look in this video.

The Writing on the Wall

There are new paintings and drawings by Sol LeWitt being made all the time -- even though the artist died in 2007. That’s possible because LeWitt’s wrote instructions for creating his works  art, for other people to make. Abbi and writer Samantha Irby consider a piece by Glenn Ligon that takes a line by Zora Neale Hurston and repeats it over and over -- transforming the text into something new. Plus, Martine Syms tells Abbi why she puts giant letters right on the gallery walls.

Ep 121: Summer Series – Joshua Yeldham

In podcast episode 101 I spoke with leading Australian artist Joshua Yeldham in the lead-up to his sell-out show ‘Providence’ at Arthouse Gallery in Sydney. I remember being fascinated by his approach to painting and his views on the creative process.

We also recorded a separate video and this episode is the first of my 2022 Summer Series which is a collection of extended audio recordings from videos I've taken of my podcast guests.

Joshua's works are extraordinary. His paintings often involve an element of carving into the wooden surface of the work and in some cases he inserts pieces of cane which add a further dimension to the work. But it's the physical method of doing that work which enhances his creative process and you'll hear him explain this and many other aspects of his practice in this episode.

If you're in Sydney you can see several stunning Yeldham works

Ep.7 Collier Schorr and Angel Zinovieff read 'Notes on Tricks'

In episode 7 of 'Thought Pieces,' Collier Schorr and Angel Zinovieff give an intimate reading of 'Notes on Tricks,' an explores the roles we inhabit as the photographer and the photographed, drawing on themes of closeness, sexuality, and the rescued relics of our childhoods.
About 'Paul's Book' by Collier Schorr
Collier Schorr met Paul Hameline, a young French artist and model, in New York in 2015, when they began to meet to make a project that lasted two years in which Collier would visit Paul at his parents’ house and take pictures and talk. The idea was for Paul and Collier to experience photography as a social space, a conversation in which his body and her eyes could try and understand each other’s fascinations and fantasies. Paul’s Book expands that magazine story to form a larger piece about the way in which a photographer and model can search for some greater revelations with the simplest

A Journey to the Interior of the Earth by Jules Verne

Loyal Books

A historical manuscript penned by a medieval Norse poet. A mysterious code. Three intrepid explorers. A subterranean world filled with prehistoric creatures and proto-humans. These are some of the brilliant ideas that are superbly blended in A Journey to the Interior of the Earth by Jules Verne. Jules Verne, the French writer who created several works of science fiction, adventure stories and very popular novels, wrote A Journey to the Interior of the Earth in 1864. Some of his other books explore different aspects of geography, space and time travel. Known as the “Father of Science Fiction” Verne's books have retained their freshness and appeal though many of the ideas propounded in them have been proved erroneous as a result of modern discoveries and explorations. Though Verne wrote popular fiction, few readers would know that he based his writing on solid research and scientific principles. A Journey to the Interior of the Earth drew inspiration from the works of a Victorian geologist, Sir Charles Lyell, who wrote extensively on the origins of the human race from a geological perspective. The book was originally translated into English by Rev. F A Malleson in 1877. Since then several English translations have been made, with the title being sometimes changed to A Journey to the Center of the Earth. Other publishers have had the book completely rewritten, with additions, omissions and changes of name. In this original version of the novel, Professor Otto Lidenbrock is a German mineralogist who lives in Hamburg. He rushes home one afternoon, elated by his purchase of an ancient manuscript from an antique shop. His nephew, Axel who lives with him is less than enthusiastic when he hears that the book is written in Runic script and is an Icelandic saga concerning the old Norse kings. A dirty piece of parchment falls out of the bundle of pages and it appears to be written in code. This grabs Axel's interest and the two spend days trying to crack the cipher. When they finally do, they discover that it has been written by an alchemist who claims that he has traveled to the interiors of the earth via a volcanic tube. Excited beyond measure, the professor drags his reluctant nephew to Iceland, where a local hunter joins them in a truly fantastic voyage.

Kenneth O'Reilly, "Asphalt: A History" (U Nebraska Press, 2021)

In Asphalt: A History (U Nebraska Press, 2021), Kenneth O’Reilly provides a history of this everyday substance. By tracing the history of asphalt—in both its natural and processed forms—from ancient times to the present, O’Reilly sets out to identify its importance within various contexts of human society and culture. Although O’Reilly argues that asphalt creates our environment, he believes it also eventually threatens it. Looking at its role in economics, politics, and global warming, O’Reilly explores asphalt’s contribution to the history, and future, of America and the world.

Understanding Why a Harvard Museum Will Return Standing Bear’s Tomahawk

Something incredible happened a few months ago. After Oklahoma lawyer Brett Chapman (Pawnee) started tweeting about the tomahawk of Ponca Chief Standing Bear, which is currently in Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the revered object may actually be going home. His short messages asked why the tomahawk was in the care of that institution and not with one of the two federally recognized Ponca tribes. The questions raised eyebrows, and as Cassie Packard reported for Hyperallergic, the museum later posted a statement on its website explaining that the museum and the Ponca tribe are “in active discussion about the homecoming of Chief Standing Bear’s pipe tomahawk belonging to the Ponca people.”Chapman, who has Ponca heritage, joins me for this podcast to explain the history of the tomahawk and why the return of the heirloom is important.Subscribe to
