HAUNTED: Curse of the Crying Boy Paintings

In 1980s Britain, a series of haunting portraits featuring a tearful little boy were discovered untouched amidst the ashes of devastating house and business fires. Raising Parents with Emily Oster

The Free Press

Ep 1: Are We Over-Parenting Our Kids?

When Emily was a kid in the 1980s in New Haven, Connecticut, she grew up on a block with a lot of other children. Every day after dinner, around 6:30, everyone emptied out of their houses and went down to the church parking lot where they engaged in all kinds of unsupervised activities—throwing balls at each other in front of the church wall, climbing up trees and sometimes falling out of them, riding Hot Wheels until people skinned their knees. There was street hockey and there were scrapes. There were a few broken arms.

That experience of playing outside unsupervised in the dark—or walking a mile home from school in kindergarten—is very different from her own children’s experiences, even though they’re growing up in a very similar environment, with very similar parents. They aren’t leaving the house every day after dinner. If Emily had suggested that they walk home from school in kindergarten, even though it’s only a coupl

She was writing in January 2017, and describing the political stakes of that period — Brexit in the U.K., Trump in the U.S. — and the way you could feel it changing people.“Millions of more or less amorphous selves will now necessarily find themselves solidifying into protesters, activists, marchers, voters, firebrands, impeachers, lobbyists, soldiers, champions, defenders, historians, experts, critics. You can’t fight fire with air. But equally you can’t fight for a freedom you’ve forgotten how to identify.”What Smith is describing felt so familiar — how politics can sometimes feel like it demands we put aside our internal conflict, our uncertainty, so we can take a strong position. I see it so often in myself and people around me, and yet I rarely hear it talked about. And Smith’s ability to give language to these kinds of quiet battles inside of ourselv

2: Drinks for Five: Ira Glass, Zoe Chace, Jonathan Eig, Astead Herndon

Brian puts four journalists together in a room, gives them drinks, and starts rolling tape. Their only instructions: show up with questions for each other and be ready to talk candidly about the challenges in their jobs. Foremost on their minds: Why do people even share their stories with journalists in the first place?

We’re Allowed to Be Here

There are a few names closely associated with the aftermath of January 6. Donald Trump, of course. The “QAnon Shaman,” for obvious reasons. And Ashli Babbitt. She was the only person shot by a Capitol Police officer that day, after she climbed through a broken glass panel. Almost immediately, rioters who witnessed her shooting recognized its symbolism. Myths began to spring up about her life. Trump began to mention her at rallies, and raised suspicion around the circumstances of her death.

Two years later, this mythologizing crashed into our mundane domestic reality when we, two journalists who are also partners, went on a dog walk and got into a verbal altercation with some neighbors. We soon realized that one of these neighbors was Babbitt’s mother. Her name is Micki Witthoeft, and she moved to Washington, D.C., in an attempt to restore her daughter’s reputation, and to help rewrite the history of January 6.

Can money buy happiness?

People often say that money can't buy you happiness. Sometimes, if you ask them to tell you more about it, they'll mention a famous 2010 study by Nobel Prize winners Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton. That study found that higher household income correlates with greater emotional well-being, but only up to around $75,000 a year. After that, more money didn't seem to matter. This was a famous study by two famous academics. The result stood for over a decade. And it feels good, right? Maybe the rich aren't so much happier than anyone else. But researchers have recently done a complete 180 on this idea. In 2021, psychologist Matt Killingsworth found nearly the opposite: That more money does correlate with more happiness. And that the relationship continues well beyond $75,000 per year.Today on the show: Does more money mean fewer problems? Two researchers with totally different takes come together to hammer out a better understanding o
