HAUNTED: Curse of the Crying Boy Paintings

In 1980s Britain, a series of haunting portraits featuring a tearful little boy were discovered untouched amidst the ashes of devastating house and business fires. While rumors of the subject and the artists' backstory became fodder for the tabloids, there's been no good explanation for why this particular image has managed to survive so many devastating fires... Raising Parents with Emily Oster

The Free Press

Ep 1: Are We Over-Parenting Our Kids?

When Emily was a kid in the 1980s in New Haven, Connecticut, she grew up on a block with a lot of other children. Every day after dinner, around 6:30, everyone emptied out of their houses and went down to the church parking lot where they engaged in all kinds of unsupervised activities—throwing balls at each other in front of the church wall, climbing up trees and sometimes falling out of them, riding Hot Wheels until people skinned their knees. There was street hockey and there were scrapes. There were a few broken arms.

That experience of playing outside unsupervised in the dark—or walking a mile home from school in kindergarten—is very different from her own children’s experiences, even though they’re growing up in a very similar environment, with very similar parents. They aren’t leaving the house every day after dinner. If Emily had suggested that they walk home from school in kindergarten, even though it’s only a coupl

Zadie Smith on Populists, Frauds and Flip Phones

I stumbled on a Zadie Smith line recently that stopped me in my tracks. She was writing in January 2017, and describing the political stakes of that period — Brexit in the U.K., Trump in the U.S. — and the way you could feel it changing people.“Millions of more or less amorphous selves will now necessarily find themselves solidifying into protesters, activists, marchers, voters, firebrands, impeachers, lobbyists, soldiers, champions, defenders, historians, experts, critics. You can’t fight fire with air. But equally you can’t fight for a freedom you’ve forgotten how to identify.”What Smith is describing felt so familiar — how politics can sometimes feel like it demands we put aside our internal conflict, our uncertainty, so we can take a strong position. I see it so often in myself and people around me, and yet I rarely hear it talked about. And Smith’s ability to give language to these kinds of quiet battles inside of ourselv

We’re Allowed to Be Here

There are a few names closely associated with the aftermath of January 6. Donald Trump, of course. The “QAnon Shaman,” for obvious reasons. And Ashli Babbitt. She was the only person shot by a Capitol Police officer that day, after she climbed through a broken glass panel. Almost immediately, rioters who witnessed her shooting recognized its symbolism. Myths began to spring up about her life. Trump began to mention her at rallies, and raised suspicion around the circumstances of her death.

Two years later, this mythologizing crashed into our mundane domestic reality when we, two journalists who are also partners, went on a dog walk and got into a verbal altercation with some neighbors. We soon realized that one of these neighbors was Babbitt’s mother. Her name is Micki Witthoeft, and she moved to Washington, D.C., in an attempt to restore her daughter’s reputation, and to help rewrite the history of January 6.

Meanwhile, has the MAGA duo become such losers that even Joe Rogan and the bro-sphere have had enough?

On a hot summer day in Illinois, police officers made their way through a field out in the middle of nowhere. They pushed aside the tall grass, and they could see and hear flies buzzing all around them. The other officers rushed to him, and they all stared down at the dead young woman. The cops knew something like this would leave people in the small town nearby in complete shock, but they had no idea what their discovery would lead to. Planet Money: Zombie 2nd Mortgages

Karen MacDonough had paid her mortgage for years, raised her family, and lived a quiet life in her Quincy, Massachusetts home—until one day, a group of strangers appeared on her lawn, claiming her house was up for foreclosure. What followed was a surreal discovery of “zombie mortgages,” forgotten second loans from the housing bubble era that have come back to haunt homeowners like Karen. As real estate prices rise, debt collectors are reviving these dormant debts, threatening homes across the country. This episode is from our friends at Planet Money, a podcast about economics...possibly the biggest thing that we all collectively try not to think about, only to have it greet us at the grocery store, at the gas station, even in our homes. This episode illustrates how massive forces pull at the economy like tides and create ripple effects in our lives, like how a decade-old loan can suddenly come back to life and take everything away.Subscribe

If you want your favorite artist to do well – you have to buy their albums from two specific retailers…
One of those companies was called Synnara Records.
At their height, it is said they had a 30% share of the record market volume. They are one of the rare business success stories raking in millions of dollars.
Until you dig deeper.
The name Synarra means- New Nation.
The record company was founded by a woman who wanted to create a new nation for her followers.
A woman who allegedly forced young healthy men to line up outside her door to wait for their golden chance to be SA’d by her.
A woman who was tried for the torture and murder of a 5 year old baby.
This is the story of the Baby Garden cult - and how they made millions in the K-Pop industry wit

Can money buy happiness?

People often say that money can't buy you happiness. Sometimes, if you ask them to tell you more about it, they'll mention a famous 2010 study by Nobel Prize winners Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton. That study found that higher household income correlates with greater emotional well-being, but only up to around $75,000 a year. After that, more money didn't seem to matter. This was a famous study by two famous academics. The result stood for over a decade. And it feels good, right? Maybe the rich aren't so much happier than anyone else. But researchers have recently done a complete 180 on this idea. In 2021, psychologist Matt Killingsworth found nearly the opposite: That more money does correlate with more happiness. And that the relationship continues well beyond $75,000 per year.Today on the show: Does more money mean fewer problems? Two researchers with totally different takes come together to hammer out a better understanding o
