BJJ Meditations

BJJ Meditations 57 | Discipline

Jiu Jitsu is a thematic exploration of structure (and structurelessness, of course). We dynamically organize our bodies to accomplish certain goals that lead us toward our ultimate objective within the game. Playing in this space of structure-no structure demands a certain amount of discipline. The same skills with which we navigate this structure-no structure continuum on the mat also serve us well off the mat. So, how do we cultivate discipline to accomplish this task? True discipline originates from within. In this episode, I explain how I relate to discipline inside and outside of Jiu Jitsu. I share this in the hopes that you will create your own system, not copy mine. Some weird thoughts and reflections on all of these things in this week's BJJ Meditations. Bonus 67: On Girl Boss Feminism

We steelman the argument for 'girl boss feminism' as a way for some women to achieve financial independence and freedom from men and the family under capitalism. Much of the logic of 'lean in' feminism, as epitomised by former Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg, is about accruing enough capital as a woman to afford privately the things socialism would otherwise provide for women nationally i.e childcare, laundry services, food provision that's an alternative to mothers cooking, etc. We think through why rich, successful women are so often hated by both the Left and the Right, including within feminism, concluding it's because access to capital presents a possible freedom from dependence on men and the family. However, that material reality is often trumped by ideological commitments (to exactly men and the family) that are deeply engrained and cultural. We also discuss the TikTok documented trend of 'stay at home ma

Don't Let "Friends" String You Along with Confusing Possibility of Love

When you’re into someone but you hide how you really feel, because you know they’re not really available, and you pretend you’re just friends. Don’t be surprised when the reality of the situation smacks you down. People who were traumatized as kids are particularly vulnerable to this “just friends” behavior. And unhealthy people can detect that in us – the way we see what they just did and -- and how we pretend it didn't affect us. In this video I respond to a letter from a woman who is getting strung along by a "friend" with JUST enough hope to keep her from leaving.

In this episode of Girls On Film we give you a flavour of the third Girls On Film Awards, our annual celebration of women in film which this year took place at our new home, Regent Street Cinema in London.

We launched the awards to celebrate excellence in women-focused films, and to honour women and non-binary filmmakers.

Girls On Film provides an inclusive platform for the voices of diverse women and people of marginalised genders, and we have a mission: to bring about industry-wide change, and to work toward equal representation of women in the film industry: on screen, and behind the camera.

As the saying goes: “if she can see it, she can be it”, and that’s why shining a light on the great work women are making can make a real difference.

How to Be Human

Anna Toonk

Hi, remember me?

It’s been a minute ya’ll! The winds of change are blowing. There is a lot to reflect on right now, and Anna is here to be your mirror. In this ep, she gives us a tarot reading to check in on where we are at and how to get to where we are going as we drop into a new year. But before that, Anna is going to take some time to tell us where SHE is going, where she has been and what we can expect from her as she taps deeper into creativity and transformation herself. Over the last few years, we’ve all been digging around, tilling soil and trying to plant new things. Have you been feeling like it’s time to turn a new page? We have! With so much going on in the world, it can be hard to get real with yourself about what you want, what is working or even what your motivations are for the things you dedicate your time to. Let’s take a minute to sort ourselves out and see what the next chapter looks like.Resources :Write or DieKate DevineSarah McCollTell Me Why You

Vipassana Meditation: an introduction to insight meditation practice | Patrick Kearney

In some recent episodes of Treasure Mountain Podcast we’ve heard about the importance of samatha - or stillness, tranquillity - meditation. But what about vipassana - insight meditation? The vipassana meditation movement has had a huge impact upon meditation practice in both East and West, and has shaped modern understandings of what meditation is about and for. So what is vipassana meditation? What is its heritage? What is its basis within Buddhism? And how does it work?
To answer these questions and more we have as our guest today Patrick Kearney.
Patrick has practised mindfulness meditation since 1977. At that time there was little or no Buddhist meditation training available in Australia, so he spent years travelling in Asia and the USA working with teachers from different Buddhist traditions to learn the craft of meditation practice. Most of his training has been in th

half-in

For many months, I have been involved in a renovation project that has extended into at least six months. Thankfully it is almost complete. The original plan was that my mother would move into a refreshed and updated downstairs area, and I would have the upstairs. This is still the plan; however, we have had to proceed in two different stages. My mum has moved in already, but my area upstairs is still quite bare and rudimentary. And by that, I mean exposed plumbing, no carpet, and a fully exposed roof! You would have to be desperate to live in my apartment at the moment, as you can hardly*(1) call it an apartment at all. Thankfully, I have a carpenter who is much more than his job description; he can do just about anything when it comes to constructing a house. He is from Venezuela, so I enjoy speaking Spanish to him. He is very accomodating and diplomatic as well. I seem to keep changing my mind and adding new ideas, and he simply smiles, clarifies what I would like

012 Submission Pressures

One of the good things about my experience at the Faber academy is that we get to turn in submissions from our drafts for agents and publishers to look at. It really pushes me to challenge myself, and see just how much my writing career is progressing. In today’s episode, I’ll be taking you through the various submissions I have to make, and I’ll be talking about the pressures I feel as the deadlines approach. What You Will Learn in This Episode:The pressure that comes with finishing up my synopsis and how I handle itThe most challenging part of meeting my first submission deadline at Faber AcademyMy plans for how to successfully get selected to read on stage at the upcoming New York FestivalAs much as I’m feeling the pressure of meeting these deadlines, I’m eager to demonstrate how far I’ve come in my learning process through these submissions. I’m willing to put my work out there, because I trust in my writing and I believe my work is good enough. R

It’s a tale as old as time, and it’s true for almost every person on the planet: there are times when we’re just not feeling good about our bodies. But hopefully there are even more times when we are feeling great about them! This week, Hannah Hart talks with Dr. Hanne Blank about healing our relationships to our bodies and better understanding what forces shape our body image. Here’s to having a better time in our bodies and inventing a world where that’s easier for everyone to do.

The Island of Dr Moreau by H.G. Wells

Rushing forward in time (and genre), we read H.G. Wells' terrifying 1896 novella, The Island of Dr Moreau. In this episode, we discuss features of early 19th to early 20th-century science fiction, the biological theories of Darwin and Huxley, the morality of religion and science, the ethics  of pain, the evolution of social hierarchy, figures of monstrosity, and how scared we were reading this book!
