Rock & the City è un podcast che va alla scoperta delle città d’Europa e degli studi di registrazione che, negli anni Settanta-Novanta, sono stati il cuore pulsante del Rock: luoghi carichi di energia catalizzante, crocevia per musicisti ribelli, produttori geniali e discografici visionari. L’autrice segue il filo che lega alcuni famosi album prodotti tra gli anni Settanta e Novanta agli studi di registrazione e alle città che hanno attirato e ispirato i musicisti. Si tratta di luoghi circondati da un’aura speciale. Il caso tipico è quello dei Windmill Lane Studios di Dublino che, con gli U2, diventano il simbolo della rinascita della discografia irlandese. Questi album spesso sono nati dall’incontro di un produttore con una band o dall’incrocio tra la vicenda personale di un artista e il destino di una città. La Island Records e la figura di Bob Marley, per esempio, sono legate alla storia di un imprenditore inglese con la passione per la Giamaica. E Gianni Sassi, un pubblicitario che voleva scardinare il conformismo attraverso l'uso provocatorio del linguaggio, ha fatto dell'amicizia e della sperimentazione le basi di un'etichetta discografica indipendente straordinaria per Milano negli anni di piombo: la Cramps Records. Il podcast racconta l’era dell’analogico e del vinile, quando la musica si produceva in sale di incisione simili all’antro del mago Merlino e i suoni nascevano dall’ingegnosa inventiva di tecnici e musicisti ‘alchimisti’. I dischi avevano due lati, una certa loro consistenza e un loro odore. Le copertine erano parte integrante della strategia di vendita. Le tracce si dovevano ascoltare una dopo l’altra: nessuna playlist fai da te e nessun effetto digitale. Poiché i brani sono protetti da copyright, la sfida del podcast è di ricreare le atmosfere degli album e delle città di cui si parla per mezzo di rumori, melodie popolari, riff e soundalike in grado di far assaporare all'ascoltatore quelle sonorità.
