Don't Obsess about your Meditation Object | Cittanupassana | Mindful of Mind | Ajahn Dhammasiha | Dhammagiri

When cultivating bhāvanā (meditation), naturally we have to be mindful of and focussed upon our meditation object; for instance 'Buddho', or the breath, or mettā; and so on...
However, if we try to exclusively focus only on the meditation object with all we've got, the effort quickly becomes ineffective, or even couterproductive.
Instead, while meditating, we always have to check out:

How our mind relates to the meditation object
How the mind relates to the process of meditating
How the mind feels while meditating
What effect meditation has on our mind: Do unwholesome states diminish, and wholesome states grow? Or does whatever I'm doing in my meditation actually cause unbeneficial mindstates to arise?

In other words, we always have to do Cittānupassanā ('Mindfulness of the Mind') to

Whether it’s Czech-style lager served on a Lukr faucet in their Arts District taproom or a throwback hoppy red ale poured with love from their Henderson taproom at the brewery, the beers Crafthaus makes have earned a reputation for quality, breadth, and accessibility. In this episode, Fisher touches on:
Connecting beers to audiences through familiarity and experience

The Foreign Affairs Interview

Can Israel and Iran Step Back From the Brink?

On April 13, Iran did something it had never done before: it launched a direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory. As historic and spectacular as the attack was, Israel, the United States, and others managed to intercept a huge percentage of the drones and missiles fired, and the damage inflicted by Iranian strikes was minor. Still, the world is waiting tensely to see how Israel will respond—and whether the Middle East can avoid full-scale war.
To understand the attack and its consequences, Foreign Affairs Editor Daniel Kurtz-Phelan spoke with Suzanne Maloney, vice president and director of the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy program, and Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group.
We discuss where this conflict could go next—and how to bring the two sides back from the brink of war.

Can Information Escape a Black Hole?

Nothing escapes a black hole … or does it? In the 1970s, the physicist Stephen Hawking described a subtle process by which black holes can “evaporate,” with some particles evading gravitational oblivion. That phenomenon, now dubbed Hawking radiation, seems at odds with general relativity, and it raises an even weirder question: If particles can escape, do they preserve any information about the matter that was obliterated?
Leonard Susskind, a physicist at Stanford University, found himself at odds with Hawking over the answer. In this episode, co-host Janna Levin speaks with Susskind about the “black hole war” that ensued and the powerful scientific lessons to be drawn from one of the most famous paradoxes in physics.

The galaxies appeared to be way too bright, way too big, and way too mature to have formed so soon after the Big Bang. This discovery has, rightfully so, sparked a massive debate among astrophysicists. Some even started to question the standard model of cosmology.

However, using new simulations, some astrophysicists decided to investigate this controversy. Among these extraordinarily talented and bright minds is today’s guest, Chris Hayward, founding member of the FIRE project.

This episode is a dream come true for my nerdy heart - I had a chance to talk to Dr. Isabella Rosner, whose podcast Sew What? I've been a fan of for years. We talked about how she got into textile histories, her PhD research and work at the Royal School of Needlework, about what textiles can teach us about what it means to be human and making time to create.
Dr Isabella Rosner is the Curator of the Royal School of Needlework and Research Associate at Witney Antiques. She recently completed her PhD at King’s College London, researching Quaker women’s needlework, waxwork, and shellwork circa 1650 to 1800. Passionate about schoolgirl samplers and early modern women’s needlework, Isabella hosts the “Sew What?” podcast about historic needlework and those who stitched it. Back to the Future

The dream of time travel is an old one, with modern storytellers and ancient legend weavers alike casting their imaginations far into the future or deep into the past to see what might be happening or may have happened then. Wouldn’t you like to get burned for being a witch at Salem? Wouldn’t you like to be sacrificed to Huitzilopochtli in the Aztec Empire? Don’t you want to see what fun implements of warfare people come up with a hundred years from now? I sure don’t, but to each their own. I’m being facetious, of course, time travel is supposed to be fun for the whole family! That’s why they made Back to the Future, a famously fun 1985 science fiction adventure movie directed by Rober Zemeckis and “presented” by Stephen Spielberg, whatever that means. Back to the Future is that rare cinematic classic that the Magellans don’t actually have that much experience with, which is why they’ve decided to go back in time to revisit this nostalgia-fueled 80's

279 // Are You Choosing Attachment Over Authenticity?

Belonging is a deep instinctual need we have as a societal based species, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of us as children (and adults) choose approval of other humans over authenticity and self trust inside of ourselves.
Once we are aware of this instinct, analysis of our behavior choices become incredible interesting. We have now brought subconscious motives to the surface and can make decisions from a place of intention and consciousness, and this can prove to create beautiful moments of unconditional love and empowerment.

Episode 153: Compact Plants for Tight Spaces

Every gardener wishes they had 25 acres to garden on, right? Well maybe not, but most of us do dream of a healthy amount of ground to build beds and borders to our hearts’ desire. The reality of homeowners today, however, is that land is expensive and typical suburban lots have decreased in size steadily since the 1970s. And smaller lots mean smaller gardens. That isn’t an issue though, if you select plants that are polite and “stay in their lane” as the kids say. On this episode Danielle and Carol talk about compact plants that are prefect for tighter spaces. We’ve got several perennials, one annual, and even a few well-behaved shrubs that made the list. Filling your tiny plot with these beauties will enable you to have a wide variety of colors and textures without sacrificing an enormous amount of precious square footage.     Julie Lane Gay lives and gardens in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she previously owned a nursery

You can describe what a journalist does in any number of ways. One definition that’s as accurate as any is that a journalist is someone who liked having homework back when they were in school so much that they decided to keep doing homework for a career.

That certainly describes the team here at Smithsonian magazine. We’re all big readers. So we thought that before our brief winter hiatus—a time when many of us are trying to think of gift ideas to please the empathetic, curious people in our lives—we’d poll the staff of Smithsonian on their favorite books they read this year. Because we’re primarily a history and science magazine, we tried to steer them toward nonfiction published in 2023, but as you’ll hear, we weren’t sticklers for either criterion. We thought it better to let you hear from our staff about the books they were most genuinely excited to share. You’ll recognize some of these voices if you’re an avid listener, but t

Heineken: Stay a Local Global Brand by Facilitating, Not Dictating

“Heineken is called ‘The Chairman’ in Nigeria. So, we give that flexibility to Nigeria to call it ‘The Chairman’, but we do not need to create a global campaign saying the ‘Chairman’ from Amsterdam. . . . We give that flexibility. That's how we operate. Have a central idea, but give local flexibility to the markets.”As a global beer brand, Heineken promotes a spirit of open-mindedness, framing its drinkers as global citizens who respect other cultures while still reveling in the comforts of their own. In this episode of Branding Over Wine, Obabiyi Fagade, commercial development manager of global brands at Heineken, shares how the iconic Dutch beer brand cultivates this flexible yet consistent brand identity in 190 different countries all over the world. Here, Obabiyi reveals that Heineken’s identity in Northern Europe is actually quite different from its identity in Nigeria, which are both quite dif

Quantum entanglement’s long journey from ‘spooky’ to law of nature

Quantum mechanics has always included mind-bending ideas. But the concept of quantum entanglement, famously termed “spooky at a distance” by Albert Einstein in a 1947 letter, seemed to challenge the limits of belief. It remained well on the edges of modern physics until John Stewart Bell’s 1964 paper suggesting a way to actually test the baffling idea that two particles can somehow share a measured property even when well separated. Host Adam Levy chats with Nicolas Gisin of the University of Geneva about Einstein’s quote, Bell’s test and why it took so many decades for entanglement, the focus on the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics, to go mainstream. Plus, how the phenomenon could help secure communications with your bank. Find the transcript and additional resources at knowablemagazine.org/podcast.

He's bullish on the North American market due to its large size and its competitive landscape, as it is a market that is so large that U.S.-based VCs have the bandwidth to help accelerate their growth. This translates to Venture Capital firms being more open to providing higher valuations due to the market size which offers the potential to expand. Andrew also provides his feedback on what he would

On this episode of The Marriage Life Coach Podcast, one of my Yummy Mummy friends comes to dive deep into all things food, relationships, anger and cupcakes. Laura Conley is a life and weight loss coach who turns your inner dialogue into your best friend and hype girl, rather than a negative energy that brings you down.   We talk about how the innocence of children is so magical and beautiful, and how we kind of lose that along the way- but more importantly how to get back to that.  You know how we check in with our spouses regularly about what’s going on and what our plans are for the weekend or vacation? Why don’t we do that with our own body? Or our own thoughts? In this episode we make talking about our relationship with ourselves more loving, caring and of course, delicious!
