The Heart of Christmas

Elizabeth Fumero Muren

The Heart of Christmas tells the story of a modern day American family who rediscovers the true meaning of Christmas. By keeping their generations-old family tradition of reading from the storybook The Servant King, they are reminded about what really is the reason for the season. On Christmas eve morning, chaos breaks out in the household with running children, noise and arguments. The youngest daughter in the family, Lisa, runs away in frustration to seek refuge in the attic. Her grandmother, Ruth, goes after her to talk with her, and a comforting conversation takes place. As they chat a bit in the attic, Lisa finds an album with old photos, and an old book called The Servant King. As grandma Ruth reads from the book for Lisa, the scenery changes, and we are transported back in time to Persia, to before the birth of Christ, as we encounter the storyteller of the book, Mustafa. He is the humble servant to his master, Zargon, who is about to gather his wise friends as they study old scrolls of scripture, and the mystery of the new star in the night sky. The wise men connect the dots, and understands that the Messiah of the Scriptures is about to be born in Bethlehem of Judea, and they decide to set out on a journey to find the King and present their gifts. As they are about to leave, Zargon needs to stay behind, as his wife is about to give birth. But he promises to follow after his three wise friends, and will catch up with them on their journey. As their journey progresses, Mustafa and Zargon encounter situations that demand their acts of compassion and righteousness. At one point, Zargon is helping a leper colony, but becomes infected himself and must remain in the camp of the sick. The dramatic story of Zargon and the story of Ruth intertwines, as we follow the modern day family through the 40s, 60s, 80s and 2000s. They family heirloom of The Servant King book, serves as a timely reminder of what the heart of Christmas really is.
