Confidentially Connie

Edward Buzzell

From best-selling humorist Max Shulman (The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis) comes this zany comedy starring Van Johnson, Janet Leigh and Louis Calhern, based on a story co-written by Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Herman Wouk (The Caine Mutiny). When expectant housewife Connie Bedloe (Leigh) is told to add red meat to her diet, she sadly replies that her husband, Joe Bedloe, makes so little money as a college instructor that their budget will not allow it. When her estranged father-in-law (Calhern) hears of the problem, the wily cattleman cooks up a scheme to trick his son into quitting the job he loves so he can take over the family business.

Song of the Thin Man

Edward Buzzell

At a charity gambling benefit aboard the S.S. Fortune, the tables are hot, the jazz is hotter and before you know it, a bandleader's body is growing cold. They're playing your song, Nick and Nora Charles! William Powell and Myrna Loy return as the married sleuths, rousting suspects out of bed for 4 AM interrogations while trying to fathom the bebop argot of '40s jazz jive. Speaking of their renowned screen chemistry, Loy once said: "It wasn't a conscious thing. If you heard us talking in a room, you'd hear the same thing. He'd tease me, and there was a sort of blending which seemed to please people." Decades later, people are still pleased. The melody of Song of the Thin Man and the entire beloved series lingers on.

The Youngest Profession

Edward Buzzell

Screen greats Lana Turner, Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon, Robert Taylor and William Powell all have cameos in this fun-loving comedy about teenage girls who cause mayhem while seeking autographs. Young star Virginia Weidler plays Joan Lyons, a New York City teenager with an endearing flair for the melodramatic. Joan serves as president of a movie fan club whose members collect celebrity autographs. When Joan learns that Greer Garson (as herself) is in town, she and best friend Patsy (Jean Porter) set out to meet the actress and get her famous signature. The giddy pair enjoy an assortment of fun adventures as they encounter several other MGM stars along the way in this breezy, modest little funny-bone tickler.

Honolulu

Edward Buzzell

A witty masquerade, fabulous dancing and a gorgeous tropical locale give this land-inspired musical an exotic appeal. Handsome movie heartthrob Brooks Mason (Robert Young) is tired of being besieged by adoring fans. When he meets his exact double, a shy Hawaiian plantation owner named George Smith (also played by Young), they decide to switch for a month. While Mason blissfully sails off to Hawaii he meets and falls in love with a beautiful dancer (Eleanor Powell) – but when he arrives in Honolulu he finds Smith's fiancée Cecilia, who's ready to marry. Meanwhile, poor Smith has been sent to a New York hospital, thanks to overzealous fans. Two women and one crazy scheme add up to double trouble for Mason, and all of a sudden the game's no fun…until Smith's grinning houseboy, Wong, gets a bright idea. The unique comedy of George Burns and Gracie Allen add to the fun in this hilarious tale of mistaken identities and true love.

Ship Ahoy

Edward Buzzell

Ship Ahoy, a patriotic musical comedy of the WWII era, swings to the tempo of its big-band times. Eleanor Powell plays a leggy lead dancer on a cruise ship who is asked to transport a mine to Puerto Rico. Neither she nor her pulp-fiction-author beau (Red Skelton) knows she's actually working for spies –who got the idea from one of his potboiler novels! The supporting cast includes Bert Lahr (the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz) and Virginia O'Brien (Till the Clouds Roll By). All of the festivities are set to the swing of Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra featuring a very young Frank Sinatra as vocalist.

Neptune's Daughter

Edward Buzzell

When bathing beauties go hunting for husbands at the local polo club, things are bound to go hysterically wrong in this comic musical extravaganza. Esther Williams stars as Eve Barrett, the owner and chief model of a bathing suit manufacturer who sees both a business and social opportunity at the local polo club. But Eve's ditzy younger sister, Betty (Betty Garrett), falls for the club's masseur, Jack (Red Skelton), whom Betty believes to be polo team captain José O'Rourke. As Eve tries to clear things up--and Jack desperately tries to act like a dashing polo player--love blooms between Eve and the real O'Rourke (Ricardo Montalban). Keenan Wynn and bandleader Xavier Cugat also star, and Mel Blanc gives a rare live-action performance. Best Foot Forward

Edward Buzzell

Double trouble: Winsocki Military Institute cadet Bud Hooper has two dates for the prom: his best girl - and publicity-seeking glamour girl Lucille Ball, who unexpectedly says yes to starstruck Bud's invitation. Comedy puts its Best Foot Forward in this snappy frolic based on the Broadway smash. The title could also apply to film-debuting June Allyson and Nancy Walker, memorably recreating their stage roles as sassy prom dates. Harry James and His Music Makers make Two O'Clock Jump jump, everybody socks over Buckle Down, Winsocki, and Lucy is lovely - and loopy, especially in a zany sequence stripped to her scanties and dashing in and out of closets. Okay, school isn't this much fun. But it should be!
